Soccer Performance Index (SNPI-Soccer)

The evaluation framework for men’s and women’s soccer All-American teams.

Download the original algorithm (Word) ↓

Building an objective, algorithmic All-American model for college soccer requires solving soccer's unique analytical challenge: event sparsity and positional divergence.

Unlike baseball (discrete at-bats) or basketball (dozens of possessions per player), soccer features very few goals, and box-score data in non-Division 1 college soccer (D2, D3, NAIA) does not include advanced optical tracking (like Opta or StatsBomb event coordinates).

To be both mathematically rigorous and universally deployable across all divisions using available NCAA, Sidearm, and PrestoSports box-score feeds, the State & Nation Soccer Performance Index (SNPI-Soccer) should be built on four distinct positional formulas, normalized per 90 minutes (P90P90), and scaled by an Opponent Strength & Game-Leverage Multiplier.

The Master Framework: 4 Core Pillars

Final Player Rating = (Positional Base Metric) × (Game-Leverage Factor) × (Opponent & Conference Multiplier)

  1. Eligibility Filter: Player must log at least 65% of available team minutes (filters out super-subs with inflated per-90 stats).

  2. Per-90 Normalization (P90P90): All counting metrics are divided by minutes played and multiplied by 90:

StatP90=(StatMinutes)×90\text{Stat}_{P90} = \left( \frac{\text{Stat}}{\text{Minutes}} \right) \times 90
  1. The Blowout Discount: Goals and assists recorded when a team is already leading by 3 or more goals are discounted by 50% to eliminate small-school stat-padding against weak non-conference opponents.

  2. Opponent / Strength of Schedule Multiplier (MSOSM_{\text{SOS}}): A scaling factor (typically ranging from 0.700.70to 1.301.30) derived from opponent win percentage and conference RPI.

Positional Formulas

1. Strikers & Attacking Wingers (Attacking Efficiency Index)

Forwards cannot be judged purely on raw goals. An elite striker converts shots on target, creates chances, and scores when the game is undecided.

Attacking Score (FWD)=[(GoalsP90×1.0)+(AssistsP90×0.65)+(SOGP90×0.20)+(GWG%×0.35)]×Conversion Bonus×MSOS\text{Attacking~Score~(FWD)} = \left\lbrack \left( \text{Goals}_{P90} \times 1.0 \right) + \left( \text{Assists}_{P90} \times 0.65 \right) + \left( \text{SOG}_{P90} \times 0.20 \right) + \left( \text{GWG\%} \times 0.35 \right) \right\rbrack \times \text{Conversion~Bonus} \times M_{\text{SOS}}
  • Key Variables:

    • SOGP90\text{SOG}_{P90}: Shots on Goal per 90 (measures shot generation and threat).

    • GWG%\text{GWG\%}: Game-Winning Goals divided by Total Goals (rewards clutch match-deciders).

    • Conversion Bonus\text{Conversion~Bonus}: (GoalsShots on Target)\left( \frac{\text{Goals}}{\text{Shots~on~Target}} \right). Strikers with clinical finishing are boosted; players taking 8 wild shots a game to score once are normalized.

    • Team Goal Share: Bonus multiplier if a player accounts for >35%> 35\%of their team’s entire scoring output (rewards carrying an offense).

2. Midfielders (Two-Way Impact & Chance Creation Index)

Midfielders are historically the hardest to evaluate on raw box scores. The formula balances offensive involvement with team possession efficiency and disciplinary control.

Midfield Score (MID)=[(AssistsP90×1.0)+(GoalsP90×0.85)+(SOGP90×0.25)+(Net GDP90×0.40)−(Cards Deduction)]×MSOS\text{Midfield~Score~(MID)} = \left\lbrack \left( \text{Assists}_{P90} \times 1.0 \right) + \left( \text{Goals}_{P90} \times 0.85 \right) + \left( \text{SOG}_{P90} \times 0.25 \right) + \left( \text{Net~GD}_{P90} \times 0.40 \right) - \left( \text{Cards~Deduction} \right) \right\rbrack \times M_{\text{SOS}}
  • Key Variables:

    • Net GDP90\text{Net~GD}_{P90}(Team Goal Differential per 90 while active): The proxy for midfield control. Elite central midfielders dictate tempo; their teams consistently outscore opponents while they are on the pitch.

    • Primary Playmaker Share: (Individual AssistsTeam Total Assists)\left( \frac{\text{Individual~Assists}}{\text{Team~Total~Assists}} \right)rewards midfielders who orchestrate the entire team attack.

    • Cards Deduction: Small penalty for yellow/red accumulation (−0.15×YellowsP90,−0.50×RedsP90)\left( - 0.15 \times \text{Yellows}_{P90}, - 0.50 \times \text{Reds}_{P90} \right)to account for reckless play or suspensions.

3. Defenders (Defensive Solidity & Backline Anchor Index)

Center backs and fullbacks rarely record goals or assists, so their score must reflect how difficult their unit is to break down, combined with clean sheet regularity.

Defensive Score (DEF)=[(2.50GAA+0.5)×1.2+(CS%×1.5)+(Goal ContributionP90×0.50)]×MSOS\text{Defensive~Score~(DEF)} = \left\lbrack \left( \frac{2.50}{\text{GAA} + 0.5} \right) \times 1.2 + \left( \text{CS\%} \times 1.5 \right) + \left( \text{Goal~Contribution}_{P90} \times 0.50 \right) \right\rbrack \times M_{\text{SOS}}
  • Key Variables:

    • GAA\text{GAA}(Goals Against Average while on pitch): Inverted so lower goals allowed yields a higher score.

    • CS%\text{CS\%}(Clean Sheet Percentage): Shutouts pitched divided by total matches started.

    • Goal ContributionP90\text{Goal~Contribution}_{P90}: Set-piece headers and assists from fullbacks providing service on overlaps serve as valuable tiebreakers.

4. Goalkeepers (Shot-Stopping & High-Volume Efficiency Index)

The biggest flaw in collegiate goalkeeper awards is picking the keeper with the lowest GAA—who often plays behind a dominant backline and faces only 1 shot per game. The algorithm must reward true shot-stopping volume.

Goalkeeper Score (GK)=[(Save%×3.0)+(SavesP90×0.35)+(CS%×1.0)−(GAA×0.50)]×MSOS\text{Goalkeeper~Score~(GK)} = \left\lbrack \left( \text{Save\%} \times 3.0 \right) + \left( \text{Saves}_{P90} \times 0.35 \right) + \left( \text{CS\%} \times 1.0 \right) - \left( \text{GAA} \times 0.50 \right) \right\rbrack \times M_{\text{SOS}}
  • Key Variables:

    • Save%\text{Save\%}: SavesSaves+Goals Allowed\frac{\text{Saves}}{\text{Saves} + \text{Goals~Allowed}}(the baseline measure of shot-stopping efficiency).

    • SavesP90\text{Saves}_{P90}: Protects elite keepers on mid-tier teams who face 8–10 dangerous shots every match and keep their team competitive.

    • Shutout Rate (CS%\text{CS\%}): Direct measure of game closing ability.

Key Adjustments: Men’s vs. Women’s College Soccer

While the structural equations remain consistent, the algorithm must account for differing macro trends between the men’s and women’s collegiate games:

Dimension Men's College Soccer Women's College Soccer Algorithmic Adjustment
Scoring Distribution & Blowouts Lower average goals per game; higher rate of 1-0 and 0-0 draws. Higher scoring variance; more frequent 4-0 or 5-0 scorelines in non-conference play. Increase the Blowout Discount threshold for Women's soccer (discounting goals scored after a +3 lead to prevent skewing national leaderboards).
Substitution & Roster Rules Historically more physical and defensive grinds; starters log heavy minutes. Free-flowing substitution rotations across many non-D1 conferences. Set minimum eligibility strictly by total minutes played (≥ 900 minutes) rather than strictly games started.
Game-Winning Goal Weight High value due to low scoring frequency. Moderate-to-high value. Weight GWG\text{GWG}slightly higher in the Men's index (+0.40 vs +0.30).
