Basketball Performance Index (SNPI-BB)
The evaluation framework for men’s and women’s basketball All-American teams.
Download the original algorithm (Word) ↓The State & Nation Basketball Performance Index (SNPI-BB) is an objective, context-weighted evaluation system designed to identify All-American performers across NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III, and NAIA.
In college basketball, traditional honors lean heavily on raw points per game. This produces two major distortions: it rewards high-volume scorers on sub-.500 teams who take 22 inefficient shots a night, and it ignores defensive anchors or floor generals whose true value lies in possession control, rim protection, and spacing.
The SNPI-BB normalizes all player production per 40 minutes (), adjusts scoring via True Shooting Percentage (), incorporates an Estimated Net Possession Value, and scales by an Opponent SOS & Defensive Multiplier ().
Master Architecture & Universal Filters
Final Player Rating = (Positional Production Score) × (True Efficiency Factor) × (Opponent SOS Multiplier)
Per-40 Minute Normalization ():
All counting metrics are normalized to the standard 40-minute regulation game length:
Estimated Possessions Floor & Minimums:
Player must log at least 60% of total team minutes and appear in contests.
Lead guards must record a Usage Rate () .
Bigs must average at least 5.0 field goal attempts to qualify for efficiency scaling.
The Garbage Time / Blowout Filter:
Individual production that occurs when a team leads or trails by points with under 8 minutes remaining in the second half (or 4th quarter in women's basketball) is discounted by 50%.
Opponent / Strength of Schedule Multiplier ():
Scaled from 0.75 to 1.30, benchmarked against opponent defensive efficiency (KenPom/BartTorvik in D1; opponent field goal percentage allowed and conference winning percentage in D2, D3, and NAIA).
Positional Formulas
1. Lead Guards & Point Guards (Playmaking & Floor General Index)
Lead guards dictate game tempo. The model prioritizes shot creation for others, low turnover rates, clutch late-clock execution, and perimeter ball containment.
Key Variables:
True Shooting Percentage ():
Shooters above national average efficiency (.520) gain bonus equity; inefficient chuckers receive a direct penalty.
Assist-to-Turnover Bonus ():
Guards with elite ball security ( ratio) receive significant upward scaling.
Free Throw Rate (): . Guards who consistently collapse paint defenses and draw fouls receive a multiplier.
2. Wings: Shooting Guards & Small Forwards (Scoring Efficiency & Two-Way Wing Index)
Wings must provide floor spacing, perimeter defense, and efficient secondary creation without consuming empty possessions.
Key Variables:
3-Point Gravity & Spacing Bonus:
High-volume perimeter shooters hitting from distance distort opposing defenses and receive positive weighting.
Defensive Playmaking Rate: Combined steals and blocks per 40 minutes () to reward active help-side rotations.
Dominator Rating: Bonus multiplier applied if an individual accounts for of their team’s entire scoring output while maintaining .
3. Frontcourt: Power Forwards & Centers (Rim Protection & Glass Dominance Index)
Big men impact winning through interior defense, rim protection, offensive glass generation, and high-percentage finishing around the rim.
Key Variables:
Offensive Rebound Weight (): Offensive boards yield immediate second-chance points and possessions, weighted 45% higher than defensive boards.
Rim Protection Factor: Blocks per 40 () combined with team rim defense efficiency when on the floor.
Interior Efficiency Factor:
Baseline for frontcourt finishers is set at . Elite finishers shooting receive strong score acceleration.
Foul Discipline Penalty: Bigs averaging fouls per 40 minutes receive a deduction for inability to stay on the floor in high-leverage minutes.
Key Adjustments: Men’s vs. Women’s College Basketball
While the core efficiency equations remain identical, the algorithm accommodates structural rule and gameplay differences:
| Dimension | Men's College Basketball | Women's College Basketball | Algorithmic Adjustment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game Structure | Two 20-minute halves; 1-and-1 foul bonus at 7 fouls, 2 shots at 10. | Four 10-minute quarters; team fouls reset each quarter (bonus is always 2 shots at 5 fouls). | Women's index applies a slightly higher Free Throw Rate weight () due to the quarter-reset foul dynamics. |
| Pace & Possessions | Average pace: ~67 possessions per 40 min. Heavy pick-and-roll and iso actions. | Average pace: ~70 possessions per 40 min. More structured transition and motion sets. | Possessions calculation baseline normalized to division-specific medians. |
| Baseline Efficiency | Men's national average : . | Women's national average : . | Positional baseline constants adjusted to respective gender benchmarks. |
Tactical Roster Composition (15-Player All-America Squad)
Traditional college basketball honors name 15-player squads divided into three 5-player units:
| Unit | Composition | Structure |
|---|---|---|
| First Team | 2 Guards, 2 Wings/Forwards, 1 Center (or 3 Perimeter, 2 Frontcourt) | 5 Players |
| Second Team | 2 Guards, 2 Wings/Forwards, 1 Center | 5 Players |
| Third Team / Honorable Mention | 2 Guards, 2 Wings/Forwards, 1 Center | 5 Players |
| Total Squad | 15 Players |
