Hockey Performance Index (SNPI-HKY)
The evaluation framework for men’s and women’s ice hockey All-American teams.
Download the original algorithm (Word) ↓The State & Nation Hockey Performance Index (SNPI-HKY) is an objective, context-weighted evaluation system designed to identify All-American performers across NCAA Division I (Men's & Women's), NCAA Division III, and ACHA Club circuits.
College hockey evaluation faces distinct statistical traps: raw point totals favor forwards playing on stacked power-play units, basic plus/minus () is distorted by team strength, and goaltenders with elite blue lines post sparkling Goals Against Averages (GAA) while rarely facing dangerous shots.
The SNPI-HKY normalizes skater production per 60 minutes () (or per game where ice time is untracked), decouples even-strength scoring from power-play production, rewards shot suppression and puck security, and scales by an Opponent SOS / PairWise Multiplier ().
Master Architecture & Universal Filters
Final Player Rating = (Positional Production Metric) × (Even-Strength / Efficiency Factor) × (Opponent SOS Multiplier)
Even-Strength Premium & Special Teams Weighting:
Points scored at even strength (5v5) reflect true play-driving ability and are weighted higher than power-play points. Short-handed production receives a maximum premium:
Short-Handed Goals (SHG): base goal value
Even-Strength Goals (ESG): base goal value
Power-Play Goals (PPG): base goal value
The Empty-Net & Blowout Discount:
Goals scored into an empty net (ENG) or points recorded when a team already holds a -goal lead are discounted by 50% to prevent non-conference stat-padding.
Puck Discipline Penalty:
Taking minor or major penalties puts a team down a man. A deduction is applied for excessive penalty minutes:
Opponent / Strength of Schedule Multiplier ():
Scaled from 0.75 to 1.30:
NCAA D1: Benchmarked directly to the PairWise Rankings (PWR) and KRACH rating of opponents faced.
NCAA D3 & ACHA: Benchmarked against regional opponent win percentage, USCHO/ACHA national Top-15 rankings, and inter-conference strength.
Eligibility Floor:
Skaters must appear in at least 70% of team games; goaltenders must log at least 55% of total team goaltending minutes.
Positional Formulas
1. Forwards: Centers & Wingers (Scoring Creation & Play-Driving Index)
Forwards carry the primary offensive transition burden. The model isolates even-strength generation, shot volume, shooting efficiency, and critical two-way faceoff control for centers.
Key Variables:
:
Shooting Efficiency Bonus:
Rewarding clinical finishers above the collegiate baseline (.110) while moderating players taking 6 wild shots a game to score once.
Plus/Minus Context Factor (): Scaled to prevent outlier team inflation:
Faceoff Win Bonus (Centers only):
Elite centermen winning of draws provide immediate possession value.
2. Defensemen (Blue-Line Anchor & Transition Transition Index)
Defensemen cannot be evaluated strictly by raw points. Elite blueliners prevent zone entries, block shots, quarterback power plays, and drive positive on-ice shot differential.
Key Variables:
Blocked Shots (): Direct measure of defensive willingness, shooting-lane clogging, and penalty-killing utility.
Defensive Plus/Minus Weight: Defensemen receive higher equity for on-ice goal differential than forwards ( vs. ) because they anchor the back end against opponent top lines.
Shot Suppression Bonus: multiplier for defensemen whose teams allow fewer than shots on goal per game while on the ice.
Power Play Quarterback Share: Bonus applied if a defenseman accounts for of a team's primary power-play assists.
3. Goaltenders (High-Danger Shot Suppression & Workhorse Index)
Goaltenders behind elite defenses face 18 shots a game and log deceptively low GAAs. The algorithm heavily prioritizes Save Percentage () under volume over win-loss records or low GAAs.
Key Variables:
Save Percentage Factor ():
A .930 SV% netminder receives ; a sub-.905 goaltender drops rapidly down the leaderboard.
Shot Volume Credit (): Protects elite shot-stoppers at mid-tier programs who routinely turn aside 32–40 shots against nationally ranked programs.
Shutout Factor: Each shutout earns equity (adjusted for strength of opponent).
GAA Baseline:
Deduction for goals conceded above elite standard (1.80 GAA).
Key Adjustments: Men’s vs. Women’s College Hockey
| Dimension | Men's College Hockey | Women's College Hockey | Algorithmic Calibration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physicality & Penalties | Higher rate of major penalties, misconducts, and boarding calls. | Checking rules focus on stick checks and positioning; fewer major penalty minutes. | Men's index applies a steeper penalty deduction for PIM (); Women's index sets baseline PIM threshold lower. |
| Special Teams Impact | Power play conversion rates average 18%–23%. | Power play execution heavily dictates game flow; top units convert at 25%–32%. | Women's index weights Power Play Assists & PPG slightly higher ( vs. ). |
| Shot Volume & Goaltending | Average SV% sits around .908–.915. | Elite programs generate concentrated high-danger chances; top goalies routinely post . | Goaltender baseline constant shifted: • Men's baseline: .905 • Women's baseline: .918 |
Tactical Roster Composition (The 6-Player All-America Unit)
Traditional collegiate ice hockey honors publish 6-player All-America units (representing an on-ice starting lineup), accompanied by an expanded 20-player full game-sheet roster:
| Position Group | Selections | Tactical Role |
|---|---|---|
| Forwards (F / C / W) | 3 | Top-line scoring, transition play, and two-way responsibility |
| Defensemen (D) | 2 | Top defensive pairing (puck-moving and shutdown defense) |
| Goaltender (G) | 1 | Starting netminder |
| Total Starting Unit | 6 Players | First Team Starting Six |
Expanded Squad (Second Team & Third Team/Honorable Mention) replicates the 6-player unit, totaling 18 recognized athletes per division.
