OUR PUBLISHING STANDARD

Sources, standards and corrections

Source First. Context Always. Decide for Yourself.

Know what you are reading

Official Release

Material attributed to the issuing organization. Issuer headlines and statements reflect that organization’s position.

News

Original factual reporting with links to the supporting primary sources.

Analysis

An evidence-based interpretation. Estimates, assumptions and uncertainties must be identified.

Opinion / Editorial

A clearly labeled argument or assessment, attributed to its author.

Sponsored Content

Paid material must be prominently identified and kept distinct from independent editorial coverage.

Verification before publication

Reporting should establish what happened, who is affected, relevant dates, confirmed next steps and what remains unknown. An official statement is evidence of what its issuer said; disputed claims require attribution and supporting records. Proposals, allegations, forecasts and final decisions must be distinguished.

Original reporting requires full-source factual review and a separate plagiarism review. Missing essential facts or unresolved close copying hold publication. A source comparison and web search are not a comprehensive plagiarism certification. Sensitive allegations, medical claims and conflicting reports require editorial review.

Headlines and context

State & Nation reporting uses factual headlines. Original issuer headlines remain attributed within release records. Context should explain specific consequences supported by sources, with uncertainty clearly stated.

Dates and updates

Issuer publication dates, the date a record was added, and subsequent updates are separate. A retrieval timestamp must not be presented as the event date. Material corrections should explain what changed and preserve the original publication date.

Corrections and error reports

Use the Report an error link on an article to identify its URL, the disputed statement and a supporting source. Reports are reviewed before changes are made. Material corrections appear with the affected story; minor spelling and formatting changes may be made without a correction note.

Report an error and view correction records

Images and commercial independence

Use only relevant images supplied by the issuing organization when reuse is permitted, with accurate captions, alt text, credits and source links. A picture on an official website does not itself establish permission. Sponsorship must not be represented as independent reporting.

Coverage transparency

Source status records actual checks and gaps. A successful feed retrieval does not establish that every announcement was captured. College sports coverage has its own source log.
