Lacrosse Performance Index (SNPI-LAX)
The evaluation framework for men’s and women’s lacrosse All-American teams.
Download the original algorithm (Word) ↓The State & Nation Lacrosse Performance Index (SNPI-LAX) is an objective, context-weighted evaluation system engineered across NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, and collegiate club circuits (MCLA / WCLA).
Collegiate lacrosse analytics must account for extreme possession swings and tactical specialization: a dominant faceoff specialist (FOGO) can generate 75% possession time that inflates an offense's counting stats, while defensive midfielders (SSDMs) and close defensemen rarely score yet determine whether an opponent's top dodge initiates cleanly. Furthermore, non-conference 22–4 blowouts heavily distort raw point totals.
The SNPI-LAX normalizes production per 60 minutes (), isolates shooting efficiency and unassisted generation, accounts for possession control (FO% / Draw Controls), rewards defensive havoc (CTs and ground balls), and scales by an Opponent SOS & Defensive Quality Multiplier ().
Master Architecture & Universal Filters
Final Player Rating = (Positional Production Score) × (Possession / Efficiency Factor) × (Opponent SOS Multiplier)
Per-60 Minute Normalization ():
All counting metrics are normalized to standard 60-minute regulation contests:
The Runaway Blowout Filter:
Individual production that occurs when a team leads or trails by goals in the second half is discounted by 50% to eliminate late-game reserve stat-padding.
Turnover & Ball Security Deduction:
Possessions are premium assets. Unforced turnovers severely depress a player's baseline rating:
Opponent Quality & Strength of Schedule Multiplier ():
Scaled from 0.75 to 1.30, benchmarked against opponent defensive efficiency (goals allowed per possession), opponent clearing percentage, and USILA / IWLCA national Top-20 rankings.
Volume Minimums:
Attack / Midfield: Minimum 60% of team games and at least 3.5 shot attempts per game.
FOGO / Draw Specialists: Minimum 50% of team faceoffs/draws taken.
Goalkeepers: Minimum 55% of team goaltending minutes.
Positional Formulas
1. Attackmen: Initiators & Crease Finishers (Offensive Generation Index)
Attackmen operate as primary dodging initiators from the "X" (behind the cage) or lethal off-ball finishers. The index rewards high-efficiency shooting, unassisted creation, and ride pressure.
Key Variables:
Shooting Efficiency Bonus:
Hitters converting above the collegiate median (.290) gain equity; attackmen firing 12 off-target shots a game to score twice are penalized.
Unassisted Creation: bonus per unassisted goal (rewards beating primary close defensemen one-on-one).
Riding Pressure: Ground balls generated in the attacking third during opponent clear attempts.
2. Midfielders: Offensive & Two-Way Transition Engines
Midfielders carry severe physical demands: alley dodging down the wings, running 60-yard transition breaks, and tracking back.
Key Variables:
Between-the-Boxes Ground Balls (): Essential measure of loose-ball possession winning in the middle third.
Two-Way Utility: Points awarded for midfielders who stay on the field through defensive possessions and transition clearing phases.
3. Defensive Specialists: Close Defense, LSM, & SSDM (Havoc & Suppression Index)
Defensive evaluation separates into three distinct roles: Close Defensemen (primary assignment matchup stoppers), Long-Stick Midfielders (LSM) (transition disruptors), and Short-Stick Defensive Midfielders (SSDM) (target of opposing dodgers).
Key Variables:
Caused Turnovers (): The premier individual defensive metric measuring checks that dislodge the ball.
Opponent Matchup Suppression Factor: Charts the production of the specific opposing attackman matched up against a close defenseman. If the opposing #1 attackman is held below their season scoring average, the defenseman receives points.
SSDM Assignment Anchor: Short-stick defensive midfielders who rarely concede inside rolls and commit few fouls receive a baseline multiplier.
Discipline Penalty: Personal fouls (slashing, unnecessary roughness, illegal body checks) that put the team in a man-down (MDD) situation are penalized heavily.
4. Faceoff Specialists: FOGO / Men's (Possession Engine Index)
Faceoff specialists (Face-Off, Get-Off) impact winning through pure clamp control, exit ground balls, and offensive break generation.
Key Variables:
Faceoff Win Spread ():
A specialist winning 65% of draws receives ; winning drops sharply.
Self-Ground Ball Percentage (): . Differentiates FOGOs who cleanly control their own clamp exits versus relying on wing play.
Fast-Break Creation: Goals or primary assists scored directly off the faceoff break.
Technical Violations: Penalties for false starts or illegal stick manipulation.
5. Draw Control Specialists: Women's Lacrosse (Center Circle Possession Index)
In the women's game, the Draw Control (DC) replaces the faceoff X, operating as an airborne, multi-player scramble that dictates match tempo.
Key Variables:
Draw Controls per 60 (): Raw possession capture rate.
Team Draw Margin Factor: Differential between team draw controls and opponent draw controls while the center is active.
6. Goalkeepers (Shot-Stopping Volume & Clearing Anchor Index)
Raw Goals Against Average (GAA) misrepresents collegiate lacrosse netminders because fast-break offenses surrender 50+ shots a game. The model isolates Save Percentage under high-danger volume and clearing execution.
Key Variables:
Save Percentage Factor ():
A Men's netminder posting a .580 SV% against Top-20 competition receives .
Clearing Efficiency ():
Goalkeepers who throw pinpoint outlet passes and break ten-man rides gain positive equity; failed goalie clears result in point deductions.
Key Adjustments: Men’s vs. Women’s College Lacrosse
| Dimension | Men's College Lacrosse | Women's College Lacrosse | Algorithmic Calibration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Possession Mechanism | Ground faceoff clamp (1v1 at center X with 2 wingers). | Airborne Draw Control circle (draw takers + circle midfielders). | Men's model isolates individual FOGO clamp wins; Women's model measures Draw Controls (DC) and possession conversion. |
| Checking & Defensive Metrics | Heavy stick/body checking; high volume of Caused Turnovers (CT) and ground balls (GB). | Controlled stick checks; strict shooting space and dangerous contact whistle rules. | Men's index increases weight on Ground Balls (); Women's index increases weight on Interceptions & 8-Meter Free Position Denials. |
| Free-Position / 8-Meter Scoring | Standard settled offensive sets with penalty-enforced Man-Up (EMO). | 8-Meter Free Position Shots (FPS) represent a high percentage of match scoring. | Women's index applies a Free Position Conversion Rate weight () for attackmen. |
| Goaltender Baseline Save % | Men's national average SV%: ~.510–.530 (heavy ball, 90–105 mph shots). | Women's national average SV%: ~.440–.465 (close-range crease/8-meter bids). | Goaltender baseline constant shifted: • Men's baseline: .500 • Women's baseline: .440 |
