Football Performance Index (SNPI-FB)
The evaluation framework for college football All-American teams.
Download the original algorithm (Word) ↓The State & Nation Football Performance Index (SNPI-FB) is an objective, context-weighted evaluation model designed to eliminate "helmet bias," voter fatigue, and small-school stat-padding across all collegiate divisions (FBS, FCS, D2, D3, and NAIA).
Because college football data availability splits between FBS (granular play-by-play and EPA data via APIs) and lower divisions (drive summaries and box-score feeds via Sidearm/Presto), the SNPI-FB operates on a dual-engine architecture: advanced efficiency metrics where play-by-play exists, and context-normalized per-play metrics for non-FBS divisions.
Master Architecture & Universal Filters
Final Player Rating = (Positional Production Score) × (Leverage Factor) × (Opponent SOS Multiplier)
The Garbage Time Discount (The Blowout Filter):
Production that occurs when the game outcome is statistically decided (lead of points in the second half, or win probability ) is discounted by 60%. This eliminates non-conference 4th-quarter stat-padding.
Opportunity Normalization (Per-Play Basis):
Counting volume (raw yards or total tackles) is normalized per dropback, per carry, per target, or per defensive snap to measure rate efficiency over sheer snap volume.
Opponent / Strength of Schedule Multiplier ():
Scaled from to , benchmarked against opponent defensive/offensive SP+ (FBS) or opponent win percentage, scoring defense, and national Top-25 matchups (FCS, D2, D3, NAIA).
Volume Floor:
Players must meet baseline usage thresholds to qualify:
Quarterbacks: Minimum 150 pass attempts
Running Backs: Minimum 100 rushing attempts
Receivers / Tight Ends: Minimum 40 targets (or 30 receptions)
Defenders: Minimum 50% of team defensive snaps
Positional Index Formulas
1. Quarterbacks (Total Dropback Value Index)
A complete quarterback evaluation balances passing efficiency, sack avoidance, down-and-distance conversion, and rushing contributions, while harshly penalizing turnovers.
Key Variables:
(Adjusted Net Yards per Pass Attempt):
Widely recognized as the single strongest box-score predictor of passing efficiency.
Sack Rate (): Penalizes quarterbacks who hold the ball too long and take drive-killing losses.
High-Leverage Third-Down Conversion Rate: multiplier boost if third-and-medium/long conversion rate exceeds .
2. Running Backs (Rushing Efficiency & Creation Index)
Raw rushing yards are heavily dependent on offensive line quality. The algorithm isolates individual creation, success rate, and multi-down utility.
Key Variables:
(Yards Per Carry): Adjusted by removing the single longest run of the season to eliminate outlier-inflated averages.
Success Rate: Percentage of carries resulting in at least of needed yards on 1st down, on 2nd down, and on 3rd/4th down.
Scoring Share: Individual scrimmage touchdowns divided by total team touchdowns (rewards high-usage workhorses).
Ball Security Penalty: points per lost fumble.
3. Wide Receivers & Tight Ends (Target Efficiency & Explosiveness Index)
Separates high-volume target beneficiaries from receivers who consistently beat man coverage, convert first downs, and create explosive plays.
Key Variables:
Yards per Target (YPT): (measures play-to-play efficiency regardless of scheme).
1st Down Rate: Percentage of catches that move the chains or score.
Target Share (): Percentage of the team's total passing yardage and passing touchdowns accounted for by the player.
Tight End Premium: position multiplier for tight ends to account for in-line blocking requirements and lower overall target volume.
4. Offensive Line (Havoc Prevention & Push Metric)
Offensive line play cannot be measured by individual box scores; it is judged on unit protection and situational short-yardage push.
Key Variables:
Sack Rate Allowed: Sacks surrendered per dropback opportunity (inverted: lower yield equals higher score).
Stuff Rate Resistance: Percentage of runs where running backs are stopped at or behind the line of scrimmage (lower is better).
Power Success Rate: Percentage of runs on 3rd or 4th down with 2 yards or less to go that result in a first down or touchdown.
5. Defensive Line & Edge Rushers (Havoc & Disruption Index)
Defensive line evaluation must avoid relying solely on unassisted sacks, rewarding consistent pocket collapse and run stops.
Key Variables:
Per-100 Defensive Snaps (): Normalizes playmakers on low-possession offenses with those on fast-paced, high-possession teams.
Havoc Total: Sum of Sacks, Tackles for Loss (TFL), and Quarterback Hurries (QBH).
6. Linebackers (Two-Way Impact & Stop Share)
Linebackers must be credited for sideline-to-sideline tackling volume, tackle quality at or behind the line, and pass disruption in coverage.
Key Variables:
Tackle Share: Individual total tackles divided by total team defensive tackles (identifies the defensive focal point).
Stop Rate: Tackles resulting in a failed play for the offense based on down and distance.
7. Defensive Backs (Coverage Suppression & Playmaking)
Defensive back awards often mistakenly reward corners with high tackle numbers (meaning they allow completions). The algorithm rewards target suppression and ball production.
Key Variables:
Passes Defended (PD): .
Opponent Passer Rating when Targeted: When charted (FBS/FCS), inverts passing efficiency allowed; for D2/D3/NAIA, uses team passing yards allowed per attempt and third-down stop rate as unit proxies.
8. Specialists (Field Position & Accuracy)
Placekickers (K):
Punters (P):
Return Specialists (RS):
Tactical Roster Composition (26-Man All-America Squad)

| Defense | 4 DL (2 Edge, 2 Interior), 3 LB, 4 DB (2 CB, 2 Safety) | 11 |
| Specialists | 1 Placekicker (K), 1 Punter (P), 1 Return Specialist (RS) | 3 |
