New River Gorge National Park & Preserve will host a public ceremony to induct the Burnwood Trail into the Old-Growth Forest Network on Friday, August 4, at 2:00 pm. Recent research at the Burnwood Trail was conducted by Dr. Tom Saladyga and eight undergraduate students from Concord University in Athens, West Virginia. Their research confirms that roughly 12 acres of the forest at Burnwood is classified as old-growth. The oldest sampled trees date back to the 1670s. After the dedication ceremony, there will be an optional 1.2 mile easy to moderate hike.
New River Gorge National Park and Preserve announces the graduation of some of its newest park rangers with their recent successful completion of basic police training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Georgia. The National Park Service is recruiting volunteers to participate in a new park initiative called Trails and Rails. Volunteers will travel on Amtrak's Cardinal route as it travels through the gorge from Montgomery to Hinton, WV and represent the park by answering questions, distributing maps and brochures, and presenting various educational programs onboard. Interested individuals should contact New River Gorge National Park and Preserve Volunteer Coordinator Adrienne Jenkins. The program is projected to start in September of 2024.
A crew from the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC) recently travelled to New River to conduct a workshop with park maintenance staff at the Thurmond Depot. Staff worked on the preservation and repair of windows, doors, and wood siding on the 119-year-old structure. This was the first phase of the preservation project. Park maintenance staff will continue to work on the historic structure during summer and fall.
The Grandview area of the park will be closed starting on May 22nd for two days to complete paving work on the main road. Access to parking lots and trailheads will be closed as work is completed. The planned reopening date is May 24th.
