BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK, Tex. – In early October, Big Bend National Park and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will initiate targeted wildlife management actions to protect native desert bighorn sheep. The project aims to reduce the population of non-native Barbary sheep, or aoudad, within the park, continuing the annual collaboration between the park and TPWD.
The National Park Service invites the public to honor the legacy of our 36th president at the annual wreath-laying ceremony marking the 118th anniversary of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s birth. This commemorative event will take place at 10:00 am on Thursday, August 27, at President Johnson’s gravesite on the LBJ Ranch. Mark K. Updegrove, noted author and presidential historian, will deliver the keynote address.

Big Bend National Park, Texas—On December 23, 2025, the water pumps at Oak Spring failed completely. These pumps supply water to the Chisos Basin developed area from Oak Spring, the only water source for the Chisos Basin. The park immediately enacted Stage 2 water restrictions to conserve the water stored in the Chisos Basin water tanks.

BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK, Texas – A new National Park Service report shows that in 2024, 561 thousand park visitors spent an estimated $56.8 million in local gateway regions while visiting Big Bend National Park. These expenditures supported a total of 585 jobs, $17.3 million in labor income, $34.4 million in value added, and $63.7 million in economic output in local gateway economies surrounding Big Bend National Park.
A new National Park Service report shows that 1.3 million visitors to San Antonio Missions in 2024 spent $114,683,000 in communities near the park. That spending had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $171,164,000.

On Wednesday, November 27, a group of hikers reported a seriously injured visitor at the summit of Emory Peak. A Park Ranger was airlifted by helicopter to the scene and located the body of a 35-year-old man from Florence, TX. Cause of death was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The National Park Service (NPS) has selected Patrick Malone as program manager of Region 6, 7 and 8 National Trails Office. In this role, Malone will administer the Butterfield Overland National Historic Trail, California National Historic Trail, El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail, El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail, Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail, Old Spanish National Historic Trail, Oregon National Historic Trail, Pony Express National Historic Trail, Santa Fe National Historic Trail, Trail of Tears National Historic Trail, and the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program.
From November 11 to November 12, a team will be cutting down and applying herbicide to invasive salt cedars (Tamarix spp.) in the Hot Springs area. During this time, visitors may encounter a temporary closure along the river from Gravel Pit to Hot Springs Canyon. Work is not expected to affect visitor access to the historic Hot Springs.
On Monday, October 28, after an aerial and ground search by NPS rangers and U.S. Border Patrol supported by helicopters from the TX Department of Public Safety and U.S. Customs Air and Marine Operations, searchers located the body of a 24-year-old hiker along the Marufo Vega Trail.

Padre Island National Seashore is seeking public comment on a draft Feral Exotic Invasive Species Management Plan and Environmental Assessment (EA) that would allow the park to remove feral swine and antelope (nilgai). Increasing numbers of feral swine and antelope at the seashore can negatively impact federally threatened and endangered species and their habitat, including the nesting Eastern black rail and Kemp’s ridley sea turtle.

The National Park Service (NPS) headquarters for San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is a commercially leased facility that is nearing expiration. As part of the process to acquire a new space the Federal government is required to acquire space through full and open completion among suitable locations meeting minimum Government requirement, in accordance with 41 CFR 102-73.100. Except when specifically delegated to individual Federal agencies, the acquisition of leased space is performed by the General Service Administration (GSA). To ensure the NPS’s ability to acquire new space, GSA has contracted with a commercial real estate broker to assist with this acquisition. As part of this process, the Broker has performed initial outreach to vendors who have actively listed facilities that appear to meet our requirements and GSA has released a pre-solicitation notice (Notice ID: 1TX2620_1) to determine potential market interest.

Padre Island National Seashore has been approved to receive a total of $7,115,165 from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) to restore abandoned oil and gas well sites within the park boundaries. The BIL, also known as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, is the largest investment devoted to the restoration and protection of the environment and infrastructure in American history.

Padre Island National Seashore has secured an additional $153,000 in project funding from the National Park Service Natural Resource Fund Source to investigate the impacts of sea level rise on sea turtle nests. The research will allow park scientists and partners to assess coastal impacts from climate change and the effects of nuisance flooding on nesting sea turtles, including the endangered Kemp’s ridley.

On Wednesday, March 20, the park received reports of an injured visitor along the Grapevine Hills Road. Responding rangers located the body of an 80-year-old man from Alpine, TX. The scene was investigated by the National Park Service, FBI, and Texas Rangers and the cause of death was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
On March 20, 2024, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has designated the International Amistad Reservoir in the Rio Grande basin along the Texas-Mexico border near Del Rio as “infested” with invasive zebra mussels, signifying that an established, reproducing population is present in the lake.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s Lone Star Unmanned Aircraft System Center of Excellence and Innovation (LSUASC) will once again reach new heights thanks to the work they are doing with unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). LSUASC recently received a scientific collection and research permit from the federal government that will allow them to conduct studies with their drones along Padre Island National Seashore (PAIS).

Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park is excited to announce that the construction phase of the Texas White House Rehabilitation Project, funded by the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA) and Repair and Rehabilitation funds, will begin January 2, 2024. Visitors can continue to walk the grounds of the Texas White House Complex daily until park closing at 5:00 pm on December 31, 2023 at which time the Complex will close to the public for the duration of the project. Affected structures include the Texas White House, Hangar Visitor Center, and Lockheed JetStar.

Four abandoned oil and gas wells, plugged in the 1970s-1980s, posed navigational hazards to boaters on the Neches River. The NPS partnered with the State of Texas to remove and remediate the exposed wells.
The Cutoff Ridge Fire continues to burn in the Guadalupe Mountains Wilderness, on the western escarpment of the park. The fire is currently 385 acres and is being managed by ground crews with air support.

US Park Rangers of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park are seeking information from the public to help identify those responsible for recent vandalism and attempted forced entry into the historic church at Mission San Jose. Park officials report that the incident occurred on June 28, 2023.
Effective Wednesday, June 28th and until further notice, Guadalupe Mountains National Park will implement closures to park areas due to increased fire risk. The Southwest area of New Mexico and far west Texas are experiencing high to extreme fire danger.
On June 23, during 119 degree extreme heat, Big Bend National Park’s Communications Center received a call for emergency assistance along the Marufo Vega Trail. Rangers and Border Patrol Agents located a 14 year old boy deceased along the trail, and soon after located the stepfather deceased at the scene of a crashed vehicle. The incident remains under investigation.
From June 3 to June 7, a team of biologists and resource staff will be applying herbicide to control non-native giant cane along the river in the Rio Grande Village area. During this time, visitors may encounter temporary closures in affected areas. The Rio Grande Village boat ramp will remain open, and use of the river will not be closed.

On Saturday afternoon, April 29, Guadalupe Mountains National Park was notified that a climbing party was in distress with one climber stranded and another member that had fallen off an edge and appeared to be unresponsive. A rescue team reached the fallen climber Sunday morning and found the fallen individual deceased. The stranded climber was rescued Sunday morning.
On May 9 through May 11, Big Bend National Park fire managers will conduct a 149-acre prescribed burn along the Rio Grande. During this project, visitors will encounter a temporary closure of the road to Boquillas Canyon.
The 2022 World Heritage Site Annual Accomplishment Report celebrates the achievements of the many partners that preserve San Antonio Missions World Heritage Site. San Antonio Missions World Heritage Site encompasses five missions along the San Antonio River basin, as well as a mission ranch located in Floresville, Texas.
The Boquillas Port of Entry within Big Bend National Park, providing access to the town of Boquillas, Coahuila, Mexico will change to the summer schedule beginning Monday, May 1st. The port will be open four days a week, Friday through Monday.
The park announces the opening of two new temporary exhibits, "The Texas Oval Office" and "The Cabinet Oak Project." "The Texas Oval Office" enables visitors to feel as though they are stepping inside the home office of President Johnson in the Texas White House. "The Cabinet Oak Project" is an art exhibition using wood from the historic, 300-year-old oak under which the President once held meetings.
On Monday, March 6, Big Bend National Park’s Communications Center received a call requesting emergency assistance for a hiker along the Hot Springs Canyon Trail. A team of Park Rangers and a U.S. Border Patrol Agent responded and immediately began CPR. Unfortunately, all attempts to revive the hiker were unsuccessful.
The National Park Service is performing preservation, maintenance, and repair work on sections of the historic Espada Aqueduct, the oldest Spanish aqueduct in the United States, located in San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. The $290,000 project to repair leaks and remove sediment and debris is funded by the Great American Outdoors Act and expected to be completed in March.
Chamizal National Memorial in El Paso, Texas and Parque Chamizal in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico sign an arrangement to form a "sister park" relationship.
From Monday, March 6, through Wednesday, March 8, the Hangar Visitor Center at the LBJ Ranch in Stonewall, Texas will undergo structural investigations for rehabilitation of the Hangar Building. For the safety of the public, the Hangar Visitor Center, including its restrooms, will be closed March 6-8.
From March 3 to March 5, a team will be cutting down and applying herbicide to invasive salt cedars (Tamarix spp.) in the Hot Springs Canyon area. During this time, visitors may encounter a temporary closure along the river from Gravel Pit to Daniels Ranch.
Spring in the Chihuahuan Desert has always lured many visitors to remote West Texas, especially during the months of March and April. Big Bend is already experiencing record visitation and those who anticipate spending spring break 2023 in the park will need to plan ahead and be prepared.
On the afternoon of February 18, Big Bend National Park received notice of a 56-year-old male experiencing chest pains while hiking the Pinnacles Trail. All attempts to revive the victim were unsuccessful.
The National Park Service (NPS) is seeking public input on the possible development of a beach management plan at Padre Island National Seashore. The NPS will be accepting public input from February 10 – March 14, 2023.
Over 99 square miles of rugged mountains and sweeping desert expanses in the northern reaches of Big Bend National Park have been determined eligible for inclusion in the National Wilderness Preservation System. This administrative determination does not make a recommendation to Congress for designation and has no impact on public use, nor does it change current management. Rather, it recognizes the wilderness characteristics of these lands which had not previously been assessed.
The final volunteer planting event of the winter season will be held Monday, February 20, in the Big Sandy Creek Unit of the preserve. Volunteers can help plant native grasses and trees in a longleaf pine forest.
What's going on in the preserve this winter? Visitors can see a temporary exhibit featuring student artwork at the visitor center, attend free ranger-led walks and canoe trips, and get a free permit to trap invasive feral hogs.
Beginning February 1st and continuing through May 31st, the National Park Service (NPS) will again temporarily close select areas in the Chisos Mountains to protect nesting falcons.
Beginning 6:00 a.m. Saturday, January 20, 2023 the Guadalupe Peak Trail will be closed to the public to allow essential trail repair work to be conducted. This closure includes all public access and use of the Guadalupe Peak Trail, Stock Trail, and the Guadalupe Peak Wilderness Campground.
On Saturday, December 31, 2022, Guadalupe Mountains National Park was notified of a non-responsive hiker on the Guadalupe Peak Trail; hikers on scene administered CPR. This attempt to revive the subject was unsuccessful.
From Monday, January 2, through Wednesday, January 4, the LBJ Ranch in Stonewall, Texas will begin preparation for the Texas White House Rehabilitation Project, funded by the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA). The engineering and architectural firm of Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. will be conducting site investigations to determine the above and below-ground conditions of the Texas White House and other historic structures.
Hunters with permits to hunt the Big Sandy Creek Unit are encouraged to hunt exotic axis deer, which were unexpectedly introduced to that area of the preserve. A limited number of permits for the Big Sandy Creek Unit are still available.
Commnet Four Corners, LLC (Commnet) has requested a special use permit to build a new communication tower in the Panther Junction developed area. The NPS is seeking public comments on this proposal through January 15, 2023.
The Boquillas Port of Entry within Big Bend National Park, providing access to the town of Boquillas, Coahuila, Mexico, as well as the Mexican Protected Areas of Maderas del Carmen and Ocampo, will change to the winter schedule beginning Wednesday, November 2. The crossing will be open five days a week, Wednesdays through Sundays.

Many of the park's primitive dirt roads and a portion of the paved Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive and Lost Mine Trail have reopened following damage from heavy monsoon rains. High water flows are expected this weekend along the Rio Grande.

On Saturday, heavy rains resulted in damage to both the Lost Mine Trail and Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive. The Lost Mine Trail will remain closed until trail crews can repair the damaged section. The Ross Maxwell Drive is now closed south of Mule Ears Overlook until road crews can repair the road and make it safe for vehicle traffic.
Salt Flat, Texas – Visitors are invited to join the staff and volunteers of Guadalupe Mountains National Park as we commemorate the park’s 50th Anniversary with a series of ranger-guided tours, hikes, and other unique opportunities to explore the park.
Hunting permits for the 2022-23 season will be available at the Big Thicket Visitor Center beginning Thursday, September 1, 2022. All hunters are required to have a valid Texas hunting license. Permits are issued first-come, first-served.
On Sunday, August 21st, Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park will launch "Texas White House: Past, Present, and Future," a series of short educational videos on the history and importance of the Texas White House and LBJ Ranch.
UPDATE 9-12: Campground Reopened The Chisos Basin Campground and Chisos Basin Group Campground in Big Bend National Park are closed to public use until further notice.
Amistad National Recreation Area will implement a fee increase and online reservation system for group campsite permits beginning October 1, 2022. All other fees will remain the same.

Park visitors now have an additional opportunity to enjoy the wide-open spaces of Big Bend along a brand new hiking trail. The Lone Mountain Trail now offers a moderately challenging 3-mile loop that circumnavigates the base of Lone Mountain, an imposing feature just north of park headquarters at Panther Junction.
On Friday August 12, 2022, at 7:30 pm, Guadalupe Mountains National Park will conduct a moonlight hike to the Salt Basin Dunes. This program will begin at the Salt Basin Dune Trailhead located at the end of Williams Road near Dell City, TX, and will last approximately two hours and cover two miles of hiking.
Salt Flat, Texas – Guadalupe Mountains National Park will reopen the Dog Canyon developed area, including the Indian Meadow Nature Trail, and the Dog Canyon Campground will reopen for overnight use on Monday, August 1, 2022.
On the evening of July 21, Big Bend National Park received notice of a fatality along the Chimneys Trail. Rangers responded, and a deceased 75-year-old male from Houston was located approximately ½ mile from the trailhead. There was no obvious cause of death.
Effective immediately, the Window Trail in the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park is closed to public use until further notice. This emergency closure is due to significantly increased bear activity in the narrow trail corridor.
Effective Friday July 15, Guadalupe Mountains National Park will resume issuing wilderness use permits for overnight camping in the Guadalupe Mountains Wilderness.
On Thursday July 7, 2022, Big Bend National Park’s surplus Wildland Fire Engine 864 was transferred to the Marathon Fire Department. Engine 864 is a 2011 Ford F-550 that is classified as a Type 6 Wildland Fire Engine, designed for use in rural settings and used in initial attack on wildfires
Researchers from a coalition of institutions have identified a living specimen of an oak that was presumed extinct for more than a decade: Quercus tardifolia (Q. tardifolia). The tree in Big Bend National Park in Texas is in dire condition, facing fungal infection and elevated fire risk due to climate change. Work is underway in collaboration with the National Park Service to reduce immediate threats.
BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK, TEXAS – A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that 581,220 visitors to Big Bend National Park in 2021 spent over $53 million in communities near the park. That spending supported 726 jobs in the area and had a cumulative benefit to the West Texas economy of $61 million.
Last week a federal jury found Hector Flores Jr. of Fort Stockton, TX guilty of one count of endangerment of a child. This case began in Big Bend National Park in January 2022 when National Park Rangers found an abandoned vehicle and a initiated a search for Flores and a nine-year-old child.
A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that 1.3 million visitors to San Antonio Missions National Historical Park in 2021 spent $104 million in communities near the park. That spending supported 1,640 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $165 million.

Approximately $9.8 million in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will go toward seven national parks, including Big Thicket, to close and reclaim orphaned oil and gas wells.
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — Law Enforcement officers at Padre Island National Seashore will be conducting a Sobriety Checkpoint as part of their high-visibility enforcement campaign on Saturday, May 28, 2022 on Park Road 22 near the Malaquite Visitor Center parking lot. This checkpoint will support the continued detection and deterrence of alcohol and drug-impaired driving and contribute to a safe park experience for all visitors on Memorial Day weekend.
From May 29 to June 1, resource staff will be applying herbicide to control non-native giant cane (Arundo donax) in the area around Rio Grande Village. During this time, there will be a temporary closure along the river from Daniels Ranch picnic area to the Rio Grande Village Nature Trail.

Beginning June 21st, 2022, Guadalupe Mountains National Park will update its regulations regarding human waste requirements for wilderness use. Day hikers and all permitted overnight backpackers will be required to pack out human waste using a landfill-safe commercial toilet bag system.
A wildfire on the remote South Rim of the Chisos Mountains that started on Wednesday, April 20th was officially declared contained at 30 acres on Thursday afternoon.
Guadalupe Mountains National Park is closing all wilderness campgrounds until further notice due to extreme fire danger and increased wildfire activity throughout the area. The Southwest area of New Mexico and far west Texas are experiencing high to extreme fire danger and increased wildfire activity throughout the area.
A wildfire is currently active in the rugged and remote South Rim area of the Chisos Mountains. The fire is estimated at 1.5 acres in size. Crews will be working to contain the fire today.

On April 12, Box Canyon boat ramp will be closed because low water levels have created safety concerns. The Diablo East, Rough Canyon Marina low water, Southwinds, and Spur 454 boat ramps remain open.
During the week of April 11th, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) will be surveying bighorn sheep and aoudad (Barbary sheep) in Big Bend National Park. TPWD biologists will be using a helicopter in the remote Mesa de Anguila area of the park to search for both species.

During this time, there will be temporary closures in the Daniel’s Ranch area, the Rio Grande Village Nature Trail, and the Rio Grande Village boat launch.
The National Park Service (NPS) is seeking input regarding a proposed housing replacement project at Padre Island National Seashore (the park). This project will demolish and remove one obsolete trailer and one obsolete modular home in an area south of the park’s Visitor Center. The project will replace the obsolete units with new housing units in the same area.
