Wyoming shifts to winter access as Yellowstone and Teton roads close

By Staff Writer · Published November 6, 2026

Most Yellowstone interior roads and two major Grand Teton routes are closed to regular vehicles, while Wyoming's high-mountain highways remain condition-dependent and Fossil Butte is on its winter schedule.

Wyoming's tourism office has updated its statewide seasonal-access guide as the region changes from fall driving to winter operations. The November 4 guide brings together park and highway information, but the controlling conditions still come from the National Park Service and the Wyoming Department of Transportation.

At Yellowstone, most roads linking the interior closed to regular vehicles on November 1. The northern corridor from Gardiner to the Cooke City-Silver Gate area remains open year-round, weather permitting. Commercial snowcoach and snowmobile travel on the winter routes is scheduled to begin no earlier than December 15, creating a gap when much of the interior is not accessible by road.

Grand Teton remains reachable on the plowed U.S. 89/191 and U.S. 26/287 corridor, but Teton Park Road is closed between Taggart Lake Trailhead and Signal Mountain Lodge through April 30. Moose-Wilson Road is also closed from November 1 until mid-May, and the park's current conditions page lists separate construction closures affecting Death Canyon access and the southern section of Moose-Wilson Road.

The state's high-mountain routes do not all close on one fixed date. WYDOT still showed Wyoming Highway 130 and U.S. 14A open in its November 5 reports, even though both are seasonal routes that can close when snow and safety conditions require. At Fossil Butte National Monument, the scenic drive beyond the visitor center is closed for winter, while the visitor center continues on a reduced Monday-through-Saturday schedule.

What Travelers Need to Know

Check both NPS conditions and WYDOT 511 on the day of travel. A route shown open on November 5 is not guaranteed to remain open, and the state tourism guide does not replace a closure notice, chain requirement or travel advisory from the road or park operator.

For Yellowstone, do not plan to drive the closed interior loop in a regular vehicle. The North-to-Northeast Entrance corridor is the year-round road, subject to weather; winter interior travel uses authorized commercial snowcoaches or snowmobiles after seasonal operations begin, and reservations and operator terms vary.

For Grand Teton, distinguish the open through-highway from closed park roads and trailhead approaches. Review the park's current conditions for construction changes, carry winter emergency equipment and never drive around a closure gate.

Fossil Butte's winter visitor-center day runs 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday, from November 1 through April 30, with listed federal-holiday closures. The scenic drive beyond the visitor center is closed through late May, and severe weather can close the entrance gate.

About the Location

This access change affects three distinct western Wyoming destinations. Yellowstone, established in 1872 as the world's first national park, spans Wyoming, Montana and Idaho and protects geothermal, ecological and cultural resources shaped by more than 11,000 years of human presence. Grand Teton protects the Teton Range, Jackson Hole and the Snake River landscape in northwestern Wyoming; its main highway corridor can stay open while scenic and trailhead roads close for winter.

Fossil Butte lies in the sagebrush hills of southwestern Wyoming near Kemmerer. The monument preserves fossils from a freshwater lake that existed about 52 million years ago, and original specimens are displayed in the visitor center. Winter closure of the scenic drive therefore changes vehicle access to the butte without eliminating the monument's indoor fossil exhibits.
