Cuyahoga Valley National Park to temporarily close Towpath Trail section for boardwalk replacement

Cuyahoga Valley National Park will temporarily close the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail between Boston Trailhead and Lock 29 in Peninsula from August 24 to November 20. The park anticipates re-opening the section between Lock 29 and the railroad tunnel, about 0.75 mile north of Peninsula, by early September. The rest of the section will remain closed for the duration of the project.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad incident statement

On Saturday, December 21, 2024, a Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad train derailed near Peninsula. Three cars came off the tracks but remained upright. There were no injuries reported among the 588 passengers and crew members on board. The incident is under investigation.

The historic home and museum at Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument will shift to winter hours closed on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays starting November 8, 2024. The home and museum will be open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Friday through Sunday. The museum includes exhibits on the life and legacy of Brigadier General Charles Young, the third African American graduate of West Point and the highest-ranking African American officer in the U.S. Army until his death in 1922, and the Buffalo Soldiers from 1866 through the Korean War.

During the summer of 2024 Perry’s Victory and International Memorial saw the completion of the project to rehabilitate and rebuild the aging seawall that protects the Memorial. Construction work begin back in April of 2022 and concluded in July of 2024.

Terrain360 and the National Park Service-Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Embark on a Historic Mapping Expedition of the Yellowstone River

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Terrain360, the National Park Service’s (NPS) Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, and the Lewis and Clark Trust, Inc. is proud to announce a project that aims to map a portion of the Yellowstone River. The mapping will use state-of-the art 360° ultra-high-definition spherical imagery to capture 507 miles of river starting just south of Livingston, Montana to the confluence of the Missouri-Yellowstone Rivers. This monumental endeavor will generate over 1 million ultra-high-resolution images, providing an unparalleled view of this historically significant river.

Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks in Ohio now Nation’s 25th World Heritage Site

On Tuesday, Sept. 19 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee came to a consensus decision to include the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks as a World Heritage Site. The group of eight ancient earthwork sites is in southern Ohio; five of the earthwork sites are managed by the National Park Service and three are managed by the Ohio History Connection.

The National Park Service closed on the purchase of 198 acres of the 213-acre former Brandywine Golf Course property on Dec. 28, 2022, from the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP). This land purchase in the heart of CVNP is an important part of the park’s long-term plan for improved public access and habitat restoration in the area. The remaining 15 acres of the property is retained by the Conservancy for CVNP.

The National Park Service has received approximately $9.8 million in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to plug, remediate and reclaim abandoned oil and gas well sites in seven national parks. Overall, bureaus within the Departments of the Interior and Agriculture will address 277 high-priority wells that pose threats to human health and safety, the climate, wildlife and natural resources.

National Park Service announces nomination of ancient Ohio earthworks to become America’s next UNESCO World Heritage Site

The National Park Service today announced the nomination of the “Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks” to the World Heritage List. The Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks is a group of eight archeological sites in southern Ohio, located within both Hopewell Culture National Historical Park and related properties owned by the State of Ohio and the Ohio History Connection. This nomination will be considered by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in the summer of 2023.

Omaha, Neb. – Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail will resume indoor visitor services at their visitor center in Omaha, Neb. starting July 1, consistent with the latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Department of Interior. All services will return to pre-pandemic levels, including issuance of the park passes, access to restroom facilities, and the reopening of Riverfront Books. Some exhibits will be modified or removed to reduce risks associated with COVID-19.

The National Park Service (NPS) announces the availability of the Environmental Assessment (EA) for the proposed Restore North and South Seawalls at Perry’s Victory to Safeguard Site Project for public and regulatory review. The harsh marine environment has deteriorated and undermined the two seawalls resulting in unsafe conditions in the Park. The seawalls are necessary to protect the cultural resources of the Park due to the proximity of the Memorial to the shorelines of Lake Erie and the relatively low elevation of the Park.

The National Park Service (NPS) is preparing an Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial (Park) for a project to repair and replace the north and south side concrete seawalls. Years of wave action, ice loading, and geological processes have deteriorated and undermined the two seawalls resulting in the creation of sink holes and other unsafe conditions within the Park. Both seawalls are also functionally necessary to protect the cultural resources of the Park due to the proximity of Lake Erie and the relatively low elevation of the Park. To enhance the visitor experience, the NPS also proposes to install interpretive elements along the north seawall.

An expedition is only as successful as its preparation. On May 12, 2019, the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail was extended to include eastern sites that played vital roles in the planning and supply procurement for the Corps of Discovery expedition. With a new historical trail head at the Ohio River in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Trail now winds 4,900 miles to St. Louis, Missouri, along the Missouri River to the Great Plains, across the Rockies and on to the Pacific Ocean. This week, we celebrate the first anniversary of this 1,200 mile extension.

Follow Lewis and Clark this Summer as a Citizen Scientist

In the early 19th century, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led an ambitious expedition across the western United States. Lewis and Clark greatly expanded our knowledge of the country’s geography and biological diversity through their specimen collection, mapping of the landscape and detailed journal entries. This year NASA and the National Park Service encourage the public to follow in these explorers’ footsteps through a new citizen science challenge from June 1 to Sept. 2. Use your smart phone and the NASA GLOBE Observer (GO) app to map land cover along the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and elsewhere to assist scientists studying environmental changes.

To commemorate the importance of preparation for the expedition, 1,200 miles have just been added to the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. The John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management and Recreation Act signed on March 12, 2019 includes the trail extension, which adds an additional 1,200 miles to the national historic trail starting at the Ohio River in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial Requesting Input on Accessibility Plan

Put-in-Bay, Ohio – Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial is seeking your input on its Park Accessibility Management Plan. The Memorial has prepared the plan to guide how the park can become universally accessible for park visitors and employees. Preparation of a plan for transitioning to full accessibility is mandated by regulations under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as they apply to the U.S. Department of the Interior. The purpose of a transition plan is to address the required physical, structural, and programmatic changes needed to make facilities, programs, services, and activities accessible to and usable by disabled people. The transition plan addresses physical and structural changes needed. Visitors can enjoy an old fashioned summer Put-in-Bay tradition on Friday, August 10, at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial when the 71st annual Barbershop Singers Concert takes place at 7 pm on the back porch of the Visitor Center. “We all look forward to this event each summer,” said Superintendent Barbara Fearon, “and the park is proud to be part of the history of the barbershop singers.”

Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial opens May 19, 2018

US Representative Marcy Kaptur (D-OH-9) leads a list of dignitaries scheduled to celebrate the reopening of Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, May 19, at 10 am. The memorial was closed in 2017 for $2.4 million in deferred maintenance (DM) work that included repointing the exterior masonry, removing efflorescence, replacing broken interior wall tile, and rehabilitating five exterior bronze doors.

Continuing the long tradition of celebrating peace through music Groovement, Low Down Brass Band, Hillbilly Casino, Swingmania and the Reese Daily Band will rock the stage at Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial. Beloved island performer Bob Gatewood will serve as Master of Ceremonies.

Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial Requests Public Input on Future of Historic Landscape

Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial has opened the draft Cultural Landscape Treatment Plan & Environmental Assessment for public review and comment for 30 days. The Cultural Landscape Treatment Plan and Environmental Assessment (EA) will guide future management of the historic memorial landscape and determine impacts from implementing this plan. The cultural landscape treatment plan includes care of historic trees and shrubs, addition or alteration of ramps, sidewalks, or stairs to improve access to the plaza and memorial column, installation of wayside exhibits, locations for future housing and outdoor gathering space, and enhancements to park gateways.

Perry’s Victory celebrates 204 years of peace at annual Historic Weekend, September 8-10

Nearly 104 years ago, on September 11, 1913, the remains of midshipmen Henry Laub and John Clark and Lt. John Brooks were moved from DeRivera Park to a crypt beneath the rotunda of Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial. On September 8-10, the National Park and its partners will honor them and all others who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie with a celebration of history, music, and art at the 26th annual Historic Weekend.

Perry’s Victory still has Senior Passes with $70 price increase less than a week away

Seniors 62 and older who want a Senior Pass can still obtain one at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial on South Bass Island. “We just received an additional one thousand passes this past Saturday,” said Superintendent Barbara Fearon. “The Park wants to be able to accommodate as many seniors as possible before the price increase begins on Monday.” The Park had less than 80 passes before the new passes arrived.

The life of Oliver Hazard Perry – “The Hero of Lake Erie” – will be celebrated on August 19 and 20 at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial with living history programs and black powder artillery demonstrations. “Oliver Hazard Perry and his actions on September 10, 1813 is the cornerstone of why we are here,” said Park Superintendent Barbara Fearon. “Celebrating his birth is a natural event for Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial.”

Seniors have options for purchasing National Park passes

Senior citizens have several options in obtaining a $10 Lifetime Senior Pass before the fee increases to $80 on Monday, August 28, and one of them is to take a ferry boat ride to Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial on South Bass Island. “We’ve witnessed a 40 percent increase in Senior pass sales the past two weeks,” said Superintendent Barbara Fearon, “and many seniors have told us they planned a visit to the island around getting their lifetime passes.” Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial is located on a small resort island in lake Erie’s western basin. The island is accessible only by ferry boat, private watercraft, and small private and commercial aircraft.

Seniors scramble to purchase lifetime passes

Baby Boomers are lining up at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial’s Visitor Center to purchase a lifetime Senior Pass before August 28 when the pass increases from $10 to $80. The Lifetime Senior Pass has been $10 since the fee was enacted in 1994. Congress created a free annual pass for those 62 and older in 1972. In 1974 they converted it to a free lifetime pass.

Perry’s Memorial To Undergo $1.86 Million in Cleaning And Repairs This Summer

The National Park Service's only international peace memorial, located on South Bass Island, will undergo $1.86 million in cleaning and repairs this summer. The 352-foot tall Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial will be inaccessible this summer while workers clean and re-point the exterior of the granite column, and replace broken tile in the interior of the memorial simultaneously.
