Great Smoky Mountains National Park is planning additional airlifts from Oct. 6-9 to remove materials from the demolished LeConte Lodge Recreation Building. The scheduled airlifts are expected to occur between 9 a.m. and noon each day. In the event of hazardous weather, the park may delay airlifts or extend the time beyond the scheduled flight window. The park continues to work around adverse weather conditions, prioritizing the safety of everyone involved.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore Announces Temporary Off-Road Vehicle Ramp Closures Due to Severe Weather Conditions

Beginning Sept. 24, Cape Hatteras National Seashore temporarily closed all off-road vehicle ramps as deteriorating coastal conditions continue to impact the area. The closures are in place due to hazardous driving conditions and risks that drivers will become stranded at high tides. Additionally, the beach from the northern boundary of Rodanthe to Atlantic Drive in Rodanthe, is closed to all access as multiple threatened oceanfront structures pose risks to public safety.

As the demolition of the LeConte Lodge Recreation Building continues, the National Park Service's Contractor will conduct helicopter airlifts the mornings of Aug.10-15. The Contractor has made significant progress with most of the timber structure demolished and focusing now on the basement, stonewalls, and foundation. During this second set of airlifts, demolished materials will be flown off the mountain via helicopter.

The Blue Ridge Parkway announced today that it has selected MM176, LLC for a 10-year concessions contract to provide food, beverage and retail services in the restaurant and gift shop adjacent to the historic Mabry Mill on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The new operator is planning interior renovations in 2026 and is planning to open its food and retail services to the public in spring 2027. The Parkway awarded the new concessions contract through a competitive selection process.

The National Park Service plans to burn approximately 180 acres in Wear Cove Gap (north of Metcalf Bottoms) and 243 acres in Lynn Hollow (near the Top of the World community) in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. These prescribed fires will help to safely reduce fuels, maintain resilient natural systems and protect communities along the park boundary.

National Park Service officials announced today that work will resume on a multi-year Great American Outdoor Act road project in western North Carolina. Intermittent road closures are set to begin in mid-March from milepost 280 to 285 near Parkway School Road, and also from milepost 291.8, at US 321/221, to milepost 305.1, near Beacon Heights and US221. Park visitors and neighbors can expect various sections within this corridor to be closed intermittently while work is underway. Cape Hatteras National Seashore (Seashore) was notified shortly before 6 p.m. that an unoccupied house collapsed at 23047 G.A. Kohler Court in Rodanthe, North Carolina. Seashore staff are responding to the collapse and plan to begin initial cleanup efforts tomorrow, Oct. 4.

Seashore visitors are urged to stay away from the collapsed house sites and to use caution for miles to the south of the sites, due to the presence of potentially hazardous debris. This is an ongoing incident; further collapses are possible due to the ocean conditions.

LAUREL SPRINGS, NC – On September 9, the National Park Service reopened seven miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway from milepost 241.1, just south of Doughton Park and The Bluffs restaurant, to milepost 248.1, at NC 18 near Laurel Springs. Opening this road section signifies the completion of another section in a 75-mile road reconstruction project underway in northwest North Carolina.

Critical repairs to James River Bridge begin on the Blue Ridge Parkway

A section of the Blue Ridge Parkway from milepost 63.5 to 63.9 will close on or around September 9, for a significant rehabilitation of the multi-level James River Bridge at milepost 63.7. Planned repairs include bridge deck rehabilitation, new asphalt overlay on the bridge, bridge bearing replacement, as well as parking area repairs and rehabilitation. The work is expected to be complete by Fall of 2026.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore provides updates on reopening facilities, beach access, and services

The National Park Service is continuing to conduct assessments of park facilities for impacts from Hurricane Erin, as the North Carolina Department of Transportation crews’ clear sand and water from the roadway from Oregon Inlet to Hatteras Village. As this work continues, Cape Hatteras National Seashore (Seashore) reopened facilities north of Oregon Inlet and is preparing for the return of visitors to Ocracoke Island tomorrow and Hatteras Island in the coming days.

Completion of this project restores access from milepost 393, near US191 in Asheville, NC, to milepost 420, two miles south of the Graveyard Fields area.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and Wright Brothers National Memorial Closures and Delayed Openings Due to Hurricane Erin

The National Park Service will delay opening Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and Wright Brothers National Memorial until 12pm on August 21, 2025 due to expected impacts from Hurricane Erin. The Bodie Island Lighthouse will remain closed on August 21st, and will reopen once post-storm assessments are complete. Late on August 1, the park responded to reports of a landslide event on Newfound Gap Road between mile marker 12 and 13 on the Tennessee side of the park (south of Alum Cave trailhead). Heavy rainfall caused Walker Camp Prong to swell and undermine part of the roadway.

Parking lots at Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s off-road vehicle ramp 34 and Little Kinnakeet Beach Access, both located just north of Avon, North Carolina, will close from 11 p.m. Wednesday, June 25 through the afternoon of Friday, June 27 to support the removal of a large Coast Guard sea buoy from the beach. A safety closure of N.C. Highway 12 in this area, lasting no more than 10 minutes, will occur sometime between the hours of 8 and 11 a.m. Thursday, June 26.

Fatality near Milepost 162 on the Blue Ridge Parkway

WOOLWINE, VA - On June 1, 2025, at approximately 11:59 a.m., near Milepost 162, a motorcycle traveling north on the Blue Ridge Parkway collided with a deer crossing the rider’s lane of traffic. The operator, Edward Zigata, 60 years old, of Shallotte, North Carolina, was ejected and sustained serious injuries.

Abrams Falls Trail closed for trail maintenance June 16-18

The National Park Service will close Abrams Falls Trail and trailhead parking lot in Great Smoky Mountains National Park from June 16 through June 18 to allow crews to complete trail maintenance. Visitors will not be able to access the falls from any trail during this closure.

All Overnight Shelters and Privies on Lands Administered by the Appalachian National Scenic Trail Park Office Closed Until Further Notice

Effective immediately, the National Park Service is closing all overnight shelters (56 total) and privies (75 total) on land administered by the Appalachian National Scenic Trail Park Office in the states of VA (10 shelters, 12 privies), MD (1 shelter, 2 privies), PA (8 shelters, 6 privies), NJ (1 shelter, 1 privy), NY (5 shelters, 5 privies), CT (7 shelters, 16 privies), MA (1 shelter, 4 privies), and ME (22 shelters, 29 privies). These closures are consistent with and in concurrence of our state and non-profit partners. These modifications to operations are in support of federal, state, and local efforts to ensure the health and safety of our visitors, employees, volunteers, partners, and local communities. These closures will be in effect until further notice.
