Great Smoky Mountains National Park will hold a free Cades Cove star party on Saturday, November 14, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Rangers and members of a local astronomy club plan to lead participants about a half mile from the Cades Cove Orientation Shelter to a viewing field for a two-hour night-sky program.

The National Park Service says the program is weather-dependent and will be canceled if skies are cloudy. Any cancellation is expected to appear on the event listing, making a same-day check essential before visitors commit to the drive into Cades Cove.

The official listing does not require a ticket or reservation and identifies the event itself as free. It does, however, ask participants to bring a red flashlight, binoculars, water, snacks, warm layers and a blanket or camp chair. The orientation shelter meeting point is on the approach to Cades Cove Loop Road, not at the visitor center farther around the loop.

What Travelers Need to Know

Check the official event page on November 14 before departure. Cloudy weather can cancel the program, and the Park Service says the calendar entry will be updated if that happens.

Meet at the Cades Cove Orientation Shelter before the Loop Road entrance by 5:30 p.m. Allow extra driving time because traffic can be heavy in Cades Cove, and be ready for an approximately half-mile walk in darkness and cooler evening temperatures.

A parking tag is required when a vehicle is parked in Great Smoky Mountains National Park for more than 15 minutes. The park lists daily, weekly and annual tags and has a fee machine at the orientation shelter, but a tag does not reserve a parking space.

About the Location

Cades Cove sits south of Townsend, Tennessee, in a broad valley enclosed by Smoky Mountain ridges. Its 11-mile one-way loop connects historic homesites, churches and cemeteries with wildlife-viewing areas and trail access; the star party takes place on the Tennessee side even though this report is routed to both states served by the park.

Cherokee people traveled through the valley to hunt before European settlers arrived in the early 1820s. The surviving cabins, churches and gristmill document the community that later developed there, while the broad valley and surrounding ridgelines give the astronomy program a setting distinct from the park's forested trails.
