Ontario Parks has closed Presqu'ile Provincial Park's Day Use Loop Road to vehicle traffic on weekdays while crews restore and repave the route. The restriction began Wednesday, October 28, and is expected to continue through November 20. The road remains open to vehicles on Saturdays and Sundays during the project.
The notice is a weekday driving restriction, not a full closure of Presqu'ile. Ontario Parks says visitors may continue to reach the walking trails on foot, but travelers must follow construction signs and directions near work zones. The agency describes November 20 as the anticipated completion date rather than a guaranteed reopening date.
Presqu'ile's camping and roofed-accommodation season ended October 26, while day use continues year-round. That distinction matters for late-fall trips: the park remains a walking and birding destination, but a visitor should not assume that summer camping, visitor-centre or vehicle-loop services are operating simply because pedestrian access remains available.
Other active park notices may also shape a visit. The pathway from the Trail Parking area to the Newcastle and Pioneer trail intersection, including the adjacent field, remains closed for construction. Access to Owen Point, Gull Island and High Bluff Island is prohibited on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays during the regulated waterfowl hunt. Those restrictions are separate from the repaving project and should be checked together before departure.
What Travelers Need to Know
Do not plan to drive the Day Use Loop Road from Monday through Friday while the construction notice is active. Weekend vehicle access is scheduled to continue, but check the official alerts page before leaving because weather or construction progress can change the timetable.
Walking access to park trails remains available. Stay outside signed work areas, follow staff directions and use the official park map to select an open trailhead rather than assuming a familiar parking approach is available.
Presqu'ile is open for day use throughout the year, but its 2026 camping and roofed-accommodation season ended October 26. A daily vehicle permit can be obtained up to five days in advance; verify the permit and facility status needed for the planned date through Ontario Parks.
Account for the separate Trail Parking pathway closure and the four-day-per-week waterfowl-hunt restrictions affecting Owen Point, Gull Island and High Bluff Island. The road project does not override those notices, and a weekend opening of the vehicle loop does not necessarily make every shoreline area accessible.
About the Location
Presqu'ile Provincial Park occupies a peninsula on the north shore of Lake Ontario near Brighton, Ontario. Its visitor landscape combines a 2.5-kilometre sandy beach with 16 kilometres of trails and paths through shoreline, woodland and meadow settings. A one-kilometre marsh boardwalk enters what Ontario Parks describes as the largest protected marsh on Lake Ontario's north shore.
The park is also a major migration stop, with 338 bird species recorded and 130 known to breed there. Its paved one-way loop follows Lighthouse Lane and Paxton Drive around the peninsula, connecting a landscape that includes the Marsh Boardwalk, beach and Presqu'ile Point Lighthouse. Ontario Parks identifies the lighthouse as Ontario's second-oldest operating lighthouse, making the loop both a transportation route and part of the park's cultural and natural visitor experience.
