Cuyahoga Valley National Park will temporarily close the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail between Boston Trailhead and Lock 29 in Peninsula from August 24 to November 20. The park anticipates re-opening the section between Lock 29 and the railroad tunnel, about 0.75 mile north of Peninsula, by early September. The rest of the section will remain closed for the duration of the project.

The National Park Service will conduct prescribed fires at four locations in Cuyahoga Valley National Park, when conditions allow, between October 1, 2025, and April 30, 2026. NPS will burn a total area of approximately 198 acres.

On Saturday, December 21, 2024, a Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad train derailed near Peninsula. Three cars came off the tracks but remained upright. There were no injuries reported among the 588 passengers and crew members on board. The incident is under investigation.
On July 12 at 6 pm, Cuyahoga Valley National Park will host the 24th U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón for a special event. Seven national parks, including Cuyahoga Valley, were selected by Limón to be part of her signature project “You are Here: Poetry in Parks.” In each park, a picnic table transformed into a work of public art will be unveiled.
Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP) will close the Lock 29 parking lot and river access in Peninsula June 24 to December 1, 2024, while a contractor completes riverbank stabilization work. Parking will be available at other nearby locations and visitors will still have access to the Towpath Trail and amenities in the Village of Peninsula.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park has closed the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail between Station Road Bridge Trailhead in Brecksville and Frazee House in Valley View through 6 pm Friday June 28. This will be a full closure. The trail will not be open during evenings and weekends. No detour is available.
Riverbank stabilization work is moving to a section of the Towpath Trail south of Station Road Bridge Trailhead. May 22 the trail to the north will be open and a .5-mile section to the south will close weekdays through August 2.
Last week, the National Park Service announced that 400 national parks reported a total of 325.5 million visits in 2023, an increase of 13 million or 4% over 2022. Cuyahoga Valley National Park reported 2.86 million visits.

The National Park Service closed on the purchase of 198 acres of the 213-acre former Brandywine Golf Course property on Dec. 28, 2022, from the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP). This land purchase in the heart of CVNP is an important part of the park’s long-term plan for improved public access and habitat restoration in the area. The remaining 15 acres of the property is retained by the Conservancy for CVNP.
Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP) has received approximately $14 million through the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA) to stabilize the riverbank at sites along the Cuyahoga River where erosion threatens the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail and the tracks for Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. Work is expected to begin in October and continue through early 2025.
The National Park Service has received approximately $9.8 million in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to plug, remediate and reclaim abandoned oil and gas well sites in seven national parks. Overall, bureaus within the Departments of the Interior and Agriculture will address 277 high-priority wells that pose threats to human health and safety, the climate, wildlife and natural resources.
Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP) has started a $2 million project to remove vacant structures and restore natural landscapes throughout the park. Funded by the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA), the enhancements will provide increased recreational opportunities for park visitors. The project is expected to be completed in spring 2022. Cuyahoga Valley National Parks announced that railroad tracks and 4 feet beyond the railroad ties are closed to pedestrians. Walking on or too close to the tracks poses a significant safety hazard.
