The National Park Service has lifted campfire restrictions in Voyageurs National Park effective August 24, 2026, at 3:00 p.m., due to cooler weather and a lower risk of wildfire. The lifting of the elevated fire restrictions aligns with changes made by the U.S. Forest Service in the Superior National Forest and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

The National Park Service (NPS) is mourning the loss of a law enforcement park ranger who died Sunday, October 6 in St. Louis County while responding to a call for help. The law enforcement ranger responded late Sunday morning to a call for assistance from a distressed civilian vessel on Namakan Lake. While towing the distressed vessel, the NPS boat capsized, forcing the ranger and the three individuals being assisted into the water.
Voyageurs National Park staff will begin removing hazard markers and secondary aids to navigation within the park this week, starting on Rainy Lake, then moving to the Namakan Basin, which includes Kabetogama, Namakan, and Sand Point Lakes. Weather and other variables will determine the exact days when removal occurs.
The National Park Service, in collaboration with Voyageurs Conservancy, has acquired and permanently preserved a 51-acre site on Rainy Lake, furthering conservation efforts within Voyageurs National Park.

The National Park Trust, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS), announced recently that a total of $361,000 was awarded to fund 17 enriching education and outdoor recreation initiatives through the 2024 Challenge Cost Share Program.

Pipestone National Monument is honored to have received the National Park Foundation’s Open Outdoors for Kids Grant for 2024! This grant will fund field trips to the park from under-resourced communities, with a special focus on re-connecting Indigenous youth to their ancestral land.
A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that 78,000 visitors to Pipestone National Monument in 2022 spent $5.2 million in communities near the park. That spending supported 72 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $6.9 million.
The U.S. Geological Survey and the National Park Service have released the results of a recent study to assess contamination in the Pipestone Creek at Pipestone National Monument. Data was collected in 2018-19 after the park raised concerns about potential health hazards.
On August 21-25, Pipestone National Monument will be hosting a Minnesota Master Naturalist course in partnership with the University of Minnesota Extension Office. Biological Science Technician Richard Schroyer will be offering “Prairies and Potholes,” a class covering the tallgrass prairie ecosystem. The morning sessions will be held on the Minnesota West Pipestone Campus and feature lecture and discussion about the tall grass prairie, its fauna and flora, and the geology of the area. Afternoons will consist of field trips to the Monument. In addition to these activities, participants will create a Capstone Project related to the park.
The National Park Service’s birthday, also known as Founders’ Day, is August 25. Without quarriers, Pipestone National Monument would not exist. As in past years, we would like our recognition to include a celebration of the people who keep this 3,000-year-old tradition alive.

ST. CROIX FALLS, Wis - The day use area and new motorized boat launch at Osceola Landing on the St. Croix River will be open this upcoming weekend. The NPS recently completed a project to increase pedestrian safety, improve traffic flow, and enhance visitor experience by separating motorized and non-motorized uses. Minor construction-related activities will continue to complete the project. Potable water is not available yet. Please bring your own drinking water.

INTERNATIONAL FALLS, MN: The rainfall received this week over much of northern Minnesota has moderated fire danger for the short term. Rainfall amounts received across Voyageurs National Park varied from 1.5 to 2 inches. Given the rainfall amounts received, Voyageurs National Park is lifting the ban on campfires in the park effective at noon on June 30, 2023.
On Saturday, June 24th, the monument will celebrate Pollinator Week with educational activities, naturalist-led plant walks, citizen science programs, and more! Activities will be offered from 11 am to 2 pm.
In response to the discovery of zebra mussel veligers (larvae) in Black Bay of Rainy Lake in late 2021, Voyageurs staff is continuing a containment and prevention program. This program involves educational activities as well as new management operations related to Kettle Falls and Gold Portage areas.
On May 27, 2023 the Historic Depot will be open to the public for the 2023 season. Hours for the Heritage Center and Historic Depot will be 9:30 am – 5:30 pm daily.
Pipestone National Monument plans to have a prescribed burn lasting one day during the period of April 24 – May 20, 2023. When appropriate wind, temperature, and humidity conditions exist within this date range, approximately 100 acres of the tall grass prairie will be burned.

Starting December 1, 2022, and running through February 28, 2023, Pipestone National Monument Visitor Center’s normal winter hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, closed Sundays and Mondays. The Visitor Center will also be closed Thursday, November 24, 2022, for Thanksgiving Day.

Saturday, September 24th, is National Public Lands Day. Here at Pipestone National Monument, we focus on restoration of the tallgrass prairie. Come be part of this annual event and join the park staff from 9:00am – 11:00am. Volunteers will assist with collecting prairie seeds, planting native seeds, and removing invasive species. No prior experience is needed - we’ll show you everything you need to know. Bring layers, sturdy shoes, and the whole family (kids tend to love being out in the prairie!). The necessary equipment will be provided.
During the week of September 13, elders from the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma will be making a historic homecoming journey to Pipestone National Monument, Good Earth State Park at Blood Run, and other ancestral sites in the region. The Iowa were early keepers of the pipestone quarries, working and trading the stone extensively through places like Blood Run.

Voyageurs National Park is lifting the temporary closure of the Rainy Lake Visitor Center boat launch beginning Friday, July 8, followed by 19 Rainy Lake campsites reopening the following day on Saturday, July 9. Other Rainy Lake campsites in the park remain closed due to flood conditions.

On May 27 a floating cattail mat temporarily blocked off the Ash River navigational channel in Sullivan Bay. The mat was pushed to the side of Ash River by local business owners and the public where it was staked in place by Voyageurs National Park staff to prevent further movement. On Wednesday, June 16, park staff will de-anchor the mat and push it back into park waters in Sullivan Bay where it can be secured until it can be treated and removed later this year.
Voyageurs National Park is temporarily closing the breeding areas around four (4) of the park’s bald eagle nests to campers and other human activities. After the young eagles leave in late July, these temporarily closed park areas will be reopened for public use.
Get an early start on your summer plans by reserving a seat aboard the park’s touring vessel, the Voyageur, and experience the park in a whole new way. Park staff will be offering 2021 boat tour programs in a limited format of 25% capacity, or 12 passengers per tour. Capacity may increase as local health indicators allow.
Pipestone National Monument plans to have a prescribed burn lasting one day during the period of April 26 – May 22, 2021. When appropriate wind, temperature, and humidity conditions exist within this date range, approximately 100 acres of the tall grass prairie will be burned. Additional information will be provided to park neighbors and the media when the appropriated conditions are forecasted, and the specific date of the prescribed burn is determined.

Following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state and local officials, and to support the nation's effort to stop the spread of COVID-19, NPS personnel and researchers will not be conducting research on Isle Royale this winter. Researchers from Michigan Technological University, State University of New York College of Environmental Sciences and Forestry, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Minnesota, Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, and the NPS planned to conduct various aspects of ecosystem research this winter as part of a long-term research program and assess the ecological impacts of restoring wolves to the ecosystem.

Today marks 50 years since the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act was signed into law, creating the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. Governor Mark Dayton signed a proclamation recognizing the occasion and declaring October 2 “Saint Croix River Day”. The proclamation reads “Minnesotans appreciate the Saint Croix River for its beauty, scenic view sheds, clean water, abundant fishery, and close proximity to over three million citizens.”

Julie Galonska, a 23-year veteran of the National Park Service (NPS), has been selected as the new Superintendent of St. Croix National Scenic Riverway (St. Croix) headquartered in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin.
