St. Francois State Park has opened a new campground loop with 63 sites near Bonne Terre, broadening the range of hookups available for overnight stays. Missouri's Department of Natural Resources announced the opening October 2 and later held a ribbon-cutting at the new campground October 10.

The expansion includes 20 sites with 50-amp electric service and 43 full-service sites with 50-amp electric, water and sewer. Missouri State Parks lists more than 150 sites across the expanded campground, ranging from basic spaces without individual utilities to full-hookup sites. The state identifies the work as a completed revenue-bond project that also added a small showerhouse.

Travelers can reserve campsites up to 12 months in advance online or through the state call center. Both the older sites numbered 1 through 110 and the expanded section numbered 200 through 338 are listed as available and reservable year-round. A vacant site may be assigned on a walk-up basis, but only after a camper checks with park staff or follows the registration instructions posted at the site.

Year-round camping does not mean year-round water service. Missouri State Parks says showers and water are available April 1 through October 31 and that water is unavailable throughout the park from November through March. The entrance gate also closes earlier in that off-season, so a winter booking requires a different arrival and supply plan than an on-season stay.

What Travelers Need to Know

Check the official reservation system for the exact site, date, rate and hookup before traveling. The campground is fully reservable, and the reopening announcement does not guarantee that one of the 63 new sites will be available without a booking.

For stays from November through March, arrive prepared for no park water and no shower service. The off-season gate closes at 6 p.m.; from April through October, the gate closes at 10 p.m. Campers should arrive before the applicable closing time.

Every camping party must have immediate motorized transportation available for a flood evacuation, except unsupported long-distance bicycle travelers. Carry-in firewood must comply with Missouri's current firewood advisories, and pets must remain supervised on a leash no longer than 10 feet.

Review the Missouri State Parks status map and active advisories shortly before departure for weather, maintenance and temporary access changes. For park-specific questions, call St. Francois State Park at 573-358-2173; reservations may be made online or at 877-422-6766.

About the Location

St. Francois State Park sits in the Pike Run Hills north of Bonne Terre. Local residents raised money door to door to buy the park's first acreage in 1964, and later grants, matching funds and donations expanded the protected land. The site preserves both natural and cultural history in a county shaped by lead mining and Civil War-era divisions.

The park's 2,256-acre Coonville Creek Wild Area contains forested ridges, cool hollows, wet meadows and a high-quality Ozark stream reached by three trails, including an equestrian route. Along the park's southern boundary, the Big River runs below dolomite bluffs and supports canoeing, floating, fishing and swimming. The larger campground matters here because it gives travelers more ways to stay beside a recreation area that extends well beyond the campsite loop.
