Wilson's Creek National Battlefield has opened reservations for a free memorial luminary tour on Saturday, November 7, 2026, with departures every 20 minutes from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. The National Park Service says participants must reserve a time and travel in their own vehicle as part of the guided caravan.
More than 2,500 luminaries will mark three parts of the Missouri battlefield where casualties were heaviest during the August 10, 1861, battle. Each tour is expected to last about one hour and 20 minutes and will include stories of people caught in the fighting. The program commemorates the 2,539 soldiers NPS says were killed, wounded or reported missing.
Reservations are available by calling 417-732-2662 or by visiting the battlefield's visitor center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. NPS will accept them until noon November 7 or until all departure times are filled. Email and voicemail requests do not count as reservations, an important distinction for anyone trying to book outside visitor-center hours.
The tour includes short walks of less than 50 yards on uneven ground lit by lanterns. Heavy rain, strong winds or freezing temperatures could cancel the program, and the release does not announce a rain date. Visitors should therefore treat the reservation as a scheduled program rather than a guarantee that weather will allow it to proceed.
What Travelers Need to Know
Reserve by phone at 417-732-2662 or in person at the visitor center. Do not rely on email or voicemail, and do not wait for the noon November 7 deadline if a particular departure time matters because slots can fill earlier.
Bring a personal vehicle, arrive about 30 minutes before the assigned departure and allow roughly one hour and 20 minutes for the tour. Wear sturdy shoes, dress for the weather and carry a flashlight or headlamp for the short walks over uneven terrain.
Call the visitor center before leaving if weather is questionable or if accessibility accommodations are needed. Restrooms and drinking water will be available only at the visitor center during the event. General admission to Wilson's Creek is free, but the luminary tour still requires a reservation.
About the Location
Wilson's Creek National Battlefield lies near Republic, about 10 miles southwest of Springfield, Missouri. It preserves the site of the first major Civil War battle west of the Mississippi River, where Union forces under Brig. Gen. Nathaniel Lyon attacked Southern troops commanded by Brig. Gen. Benjamin McCulloch and Missouri State Guard Maj. Gen. Sterling Price.
The August 1861 battle ended in a Southern tactical victory after Union forces withdrew, but the result did not secure lasting control of Missouri. The luminary route uses the battlefield landscape itself to connect the casualty count with places where the fighting was most intense, making the evening program different from a standard daylight driving tour or museum visit.
