Adams National Historical Park will hold two free outdoor programs on Veterans Day, November 11, about John Adams and the founding of the U.S. Navy. The National Park Service scheduled the talks for 2:30 and 4 p.m. outside the Carriage House at Peace field, 135 Adams Street in Quincy, and says reservations are not required for those programs.

A visit inside the Old House at Peace field and the Stone Library works differently. Guided tours require a reservation obtained in person, first-come and first-served, at the park visitor center at 1250 Hancock Street. Large bags, food and drinks cannot be taken into the historic buildings.

The park directs visitors to leave cars at the visitor center, then walk or use the trolley for the half-mile trip to Peace field. Trolley service will stop during the Quincy Veterans Day Parade, approximately 10:30 a.m. to noon. Limited accessible parking is available along Adams Street, and the visitor center and Old House are about a half-mile from the Quincy Center station on the MBTA Red Line.

November 11 is a federal recreation fee-free day, but that does not remove the same-day reservation requirement for a house tour. The buildings are not climate controlled, and programs can change or be canceled for unsafe weather. The park's 2026 tour season continues only through November 13; the separate Adams Farm birthplace property remains closed for landscape restoration and is scheduled to reopen in spring 2027.

What Travelers Need to Know

For the 2:30 or 4 p.m. outdoor program, go to the Carriage House grounds at Peace field, 135 Adams Street. No reservation is required, but check the official release and park alerts on the morning of November 11 in case weather changes the schedule.

For an Old House and Stone Library tour, first go to the visitor center at 1250 Hancock Street and request a same-day reservation in person. Availability is first-come, first-served; an outdoor-program plan does not guarantee a place on a house tour.

Allow extra time between the visitor center and Peace field. The trolley is expected to stop from about 10:30 a.m. to noon during the city parade, while walking remains roughly a half mile. Visitors who need the limited accessible parking at Peace field should confirm arrangements with the park.

Dress for cold outdoor and indoor conditions, leave large bags and food outside the historic buildings, and verify the tour-day operating schedule. The season ends November 13, and the Adams birthplaces remain unavailable during the restoration project.

About the Location

Adams National Historical Park preserves homes, grounds and personal property associated with four generations of the Adams family in Quincy, about ten miles south of Boston. The park includes the birthplaces of John Adams and John Quincy Adams and the Old House at Peace field, where members of the family lived from 1787 to 1927.

The Peace field property includes the Old House, a formal garden and the Stone Library, built in 1873 to hold a family collection of more than 12,000 books. Veterans Day programming is especially connected to the site's interpretation of public service because the park tells the stories of two presidents, two first ladies, diplomats, writers and later Adams descendants across nearly two centuries.
