Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks in Ohio now Nation’s 25th World Heritage Site

On Tuesday, Sept. 19 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee came to a consensus decision to include the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks as a World Heritage Site. The group of eight ancient earthwork sites is in southern Ohio; five of the earthwork sites are managed by the National Park Service and three are managed by the Ohio History Connection.

National Park Service announces nomination of ancient Ohio earthworks to become America’s next UNESCO World Heritage Site

The National Park Service today announced the nomination of the “Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks” to the World Heritage List. The Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks is a group of eight archeological sites in southern Ohio, located within both Hopewell Culture National Historical Park and related properties owned by the State of Ohio and the Ohio History Connection. This nomination will be considered by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in the summer of 2023.

Visitor Center Reopening

The Mound City Group visitor center has officially reopened as of May 27, 2021. Visitor center operations will have limited hours so please be sure to check regularly as to opening and closing times for the building.

Grassland Conversion Plan

Hopewell Culture National Historic Park will convert three former agriculture fields (112 acres) to native grasslands to protect the historic earthworks of the park. The public comment period is now open, until April 15th, 2017.
