Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site is set to come alive with the sights, sounds, smells and excitement of the American Frontier during the annual Rendezvous taking place June 18-21, 2026.
The National Park Service has scheduled a prescribed fire on federal lands in Williams County this Spring depending on environmental conditions. The current plan is to burn approximately 15 acres of grassland near the maintenance shop.
Beginning October 9, 2023, through March 30, 2024, Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site will be closed Monday-Tuesday and open Wednesday-Sunday from 9:00 – 5:00 Central Time.

Fort Union Trading Post will close to the public from May 23-27 for parking lot repairs. Visitors will be re-directed to The Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center, where park staff will host temporary visitor center operations.

Following guidance from the CDC and recommendations from state and local public health authorities in consultation with NPS Public Health Service Officers as of 3/18/2020 Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site’s Visitor Center and historic structures, including restroom facilities, are closed until further notice. Where it is possible to adhere to the latest health guidance, grounds, trails, and picnic areas will remain open to provide healthy options for the public to enjoy. Updates will be posted to the park website and social media.
This closure is due to an experimental animal based treatment of non-native vegetation. Approximately 50 cattle will graze in the overlook on non-native vegetation, primarily Smooth Brome and Crested Wheatgrass that are the first to “green-up” and are preferred by grazing animals.
Native American music, dancing, and culture are part of this year’s annual Indian Arts Showcase at Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site. This event is free.
Fort Union announces the results of the Expanded Park Housing/Utilities Plan and Environmental Assessment (EA). “This plan analyzed two action alternatives,” said park superintendent Andy Banta. “The proposed alternatives focused on the immediate need for housing park employees.”
FORT UNION TRADING POST NHS, ND – Fort Union is soliciting comments on the Expanded Park Housing/Utilities Plan and Environmental Assessment (EA). The EA documents the results of this plan and the potential environmental impacts associated with the preferred alternative. The comment period runs through January 11, 2016.
