“Laboring for Freedom: African Americans in the Blackstone River Valley” is a collaborative exhibit created by Stages of Freedom staff and the National Park Service. This exhibit highlights the contributions of Black laborers from Providence to Worcester, with a focus on the early decades of industry up through the Civil War.

River Bend East Songwriters Festival

Now in its sixth year, River Bend East Songwriters Festival continues to highlight the best regional songwriting talent found throughout New England. The 2024 River Bend East Songwriters Festival will occur over Labor Day weekend, from Friday, August 30— Saturday, August 31, 2024, at Old Slater Mill National Historic Landmark, 67 Roosevelt Ave., Pawtucket, RI 02860, along the banks of the beautiful Blackstone River. All events are FREE and ample parking is available. Bring chairs and blankets to relax and enjoy; no registration is required.

National Park Service Hosts Artist Dan Borelli at Slater Mill

Massachusetts artist Dan Borelli will spend the next few months as Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park’s artist in residence. In a project titled, “Illuminating Futures: Blackstone River Valley,” Borelli will gather information from locals around Old Slater Mill to hear stories and create a prototype installation. This proposed lighting installation will raise awareness about water quality and foster stewardship for the Blackstone River. He will be engaging with the public on August 7th, 25th, and September 9th, 11th, and 25th at Old Slater Mill, 67 Roosevelt Avenue.

Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland today established the boundaries of Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park, celebrating a significant milestone in the ongoing evolution of a national park that tells the story of the birth of America’s industrialization and its profound impact on society. Secretary Haaland made the announcement in a meeting with members of the Rhode Island congressional delegation today.

"Revolution in the Air” Winter Lecture Series 2021

Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park will once again offer its annual winter lecture series discussing the Blackstone Valley’s role as an incubator for revolutionary thought and action. In partnership with the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, lectures will be offered virtually using Zoom. This six-part series will cover a variety of topics including labor reform, ethnic religion and politics, the cotton economy, and architecture. Presentations begin on Saturday afternoons at 2:00 PM. Lectures will be offered on January 23, February 6, February 20, March 6, March 20, and April 3. These lectures are free and open to the public. Registration is required to receive the Zoom link. You can register at https://bit.ly/RevolutionInTheAir.

Eric Breitkreutz Named Superintendent of Roger Williams National Memorial, Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park

National Park Service (NPS) Regional Director Gay Vietzke has named William “Eric” Breitkreutz as the new superintendent of Roger Williams National Memorial and the Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park. He will begin his new assignment in late May to early June.
