Acadia National Park Advisory Commission to meet on September 14

The Acadia National Park Advisory Commission will meet on Monday, September 14, at 1 pm at the Atlantic Oceanside Hotel & Event Center (119 Eden Street, Bar Harbor, Maine). The meeting is open to the public and will include an opportunity for public comment. A virtual meeting option is available for those who are unable to attend in person.

Spring Prescribed Burns Planned for Acadia National Park

The National Park Service (NPS) is planning to conduct prescribed burns in Acadia National Park throughout the weekend of April 25, provided weather and fuel conditions are within the prescribed ranges established in the park’s prescribed fire plan. If conditions do not allow for the prescribed burns to take place as planned, NPS will complete them before May 15, 2026.

Temporary closures for peregrine falcon nesting in Acadia National Park

To provide peregrine falcons adequate space for nesting, the National Park Service temporarily closed areas including Jordan Cliffs Trail, Precipice Trail, and Valley Cove Trail in Acadia National Park until further notice starting March 1. In addition, the parking lot for the Precipice Trail will remain closed to vehicles until further notice. These annual closures protect the peregrine falcons from inadvertent human disturbance or harassment during the nesting period.

National Park Service awards two contracts to complete housing construction at Harden Farm

The National Park Service recently awarded two major contracts to complete the construction of employee housing at Harden Farm. A $3.4 million contract will connect the site to the town of Bar Harbor’s sewer system, and a $7.4 million contract will construct an additional 28 bedrooms for park employee housing.

The National Park Service and partners have published a Visitor Use Management Plan for the Virginia Triple Crown Segment of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. The Virginia Triple Crown Segment includes the iconic Dragon’s Tooth, McAfee Knob, and Tinker Cliffs areas. This plan will guide long term visitor management in this area.

Three national scenic trails designated as units of the National Park System

Three national scenic trails have become the country’s newest national parks, raising the total number of existing parks from 425 to 428. The Ice Age, New England, and North Country national scenic trails, all previously established by Congress and administered by the National Park Service as part of the National Trails System, are now also recognized as units of the National Park System.

All Overnight Shelters and Privies on Lands Administered by the Appalachian National Scenic Trail Park Office Closed Until Further Notice

Effective immediately, the National Park Service is closing all overnight shelters (56 total) and privies (75 total) on land administered by the Appalachian National Scenic Trail Park Office in the states of VA (10 shelters, 12 privies), MD (1 shelter, 2 privies), PA (8 shelters, 6 privies), NJ (1 shelter, 1 privy), NY (5 shelters, 5 privies), CT (7 shelters, 16 privies), MA (1 shelter, 4 privies), and ME (22 shelters, 29 privies). These closures are consistent with and in concurrence of our state and non-profit partners. These modifications to operations are in support of federal, state, and local efforts to ensure the health and safety of our visitors, employees, volunteers, partners, and local communities. These closures will be in effect until further notice.
