Many roads and facilities within Buffalo National River were damaged in the heavy rains that the area experienced earlier this week. Several inches of rain fell across the watershed between November 3rd and 5th, 2024.

A new water line has been installed at Steel Creek and all amenities have now been restored to the area. The Steel Creek Campground, launch and all restroom facilities will reopen starting on Friday, September 20, 2024.

On Wednesday, June 9th, 2021, the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) will demolish the old Highway 7 bridge at Pruitt in Newton County. This demolition will affect vehicle traffic on Highway 7 and visitor access to this area of Buffalo National River.

Buffalo National River has opened park roads, to include park administrative roads, to electric bikes (e-bikes). While bicycles have always been allowed on park roads, they are now also allowed on administrative roads. Bicycles and e-bikes are still prohibited from being used on trails in the park.

At approximately 11:00 a.m., June 17th, 2020, search and rescue personnel discovered the remains of lost hiker Thomas Reid in the Sneeds Creek drainage area within the Ponca Wilderness area of Buffalo National River, south of Compton.

The National Park Service is seeking information to help locate a missing man from West Memphis, Arkansas. Thomas (Tom) Reid, age 65, was last seen on the Sneeds Creek trail within the boundaries of Buffalo National River south of Compton at approximately 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2020.
