West Virginia funds a rural eye-screening network; clinic rollout details remain pending

Staff Writer · 2026-10-15

Governor Patrick Morrisey announced a $2,000,026 Rural Health Transformation Program award to the WVU Eye Institute on October 14. Plans include local eye screening, four regional testing centers and eight trained technicians, with service intended to reach the 14 West Virginia counties the state says lack a local eye doctor.

The award falls under the state’s Connected Care Grid initiative. It links planned screening at local medical offices and health centers with regional facilities and specialist oversight. The announcement does not say the new centers are already accepting patients.

The state also plans navigation support after positive screening results, including help involving diabetes, nutrition and transportation. The notice describes intended services, not an individual diagnosis or a guarantee that every resident qualifies.

Clinic locations, opening dates, referral instructions and patient charges or coverage requirements remain unspecified. No patient-enrollment deadline or current technician-job application is provided. Residents should rely on their existing care arrangements until the program confirms availability; the grant announcement is not an appointment offer.
