FEMA extends July-flood assistance deadline for four West Virginia counties

Staff Writer · 2026-10-04

People affected by July flooding in Lewis, Pleasants, Ritchie and Upshur counties may apply for FEMA disaster assistance through October 17 after a two-week extension requested by the governor.

The extension applies to individuals and families in Lewis, Pleasants, Ritchie and Upshur counties who were affected by the July flooding and may be eligible for federal disaster assistance. Eligibility is determined by FEMA; the governor's notice does not say that every applicant will qualify.

Residents can apply through DisasterAssistance.gov, the FEMA mobile app, the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362, or an open Disaster Recovery Center. The helpline offers assistance in multiple languages.

Disaster Recovery Centers at the Upshur County Development Authority and the former Summit Center in Weston are scheduled to remain open through October 17. The announced hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The state notice gives the October 17 closing date but does not specify a final application time, so applicants should not assume applications remain open until midnight.
