West Virginia reopens homeland-security grants through October 16

Staff Writer · 2026-10-08

West Virginia local governments, law-enforcement agencies, emergency managers and county election offices may apply through October 16, 2026, for reopened federal preparedness funding focused on border-related response and election security.

West Virginia Emergency Management reopened the fiscal 2026 Homeland Security Grant Program because the state reported too few qualifying proposals in two federally designated priority areas: border crisis and response, and election security. The state lists October 16 as the closing date but does not state a final clock time in the notice.

Eligible applicants include local government units, county commissions, municipal police departments, sheriff offices, county emergency-management agencies and county election offices. The notice describes eligible work such as detection and communications equipment, information sharing, specialized training, physical security, cybersecurity tools, backup power and safety training.

Applications must be submitted through the West Virginia Grant Portal linked by the issuing agency. Applicants should confirm the portal cutoff directly with West Virginia Emergency Management, because the published notice gives only a date, and should use the agency contact for project-scoping and application questions.
