The initiative began with federal funding in 2017 to inventory and test more than 10,000 previously untested sexual-assault kits. The Attorney General's Office says the final kit tested under that grant was completed in May 2026 and that the work has helped solve at least 22 cases, with other investigations continuing.
The permanent team will assist local law enforcement with investigations, prosecutions, cold-case reviews, anti-human-trafficking work and data analysis. The office says 4,186 DNA profiles were uploaded to the national database and more than 2,000 produced a match to an existing offender profile or DNA linked to another crime.
The Legislature approved state funding in 2024 to continue the work after the federal grant. A separate federal grant will support coordination of hospital responses by forensic nurse examiners; the release does not identify a new application process for residents or local agencies.
