Fairfax County recycling-cart shortage delays repairs and replacements

Staff Writer · 2026-10-08 · Fairfax County

Fairfax County is temporarily out of 95-gallon recycling carts for county collection customers, but it is still accepting repair and replacement requests and says residents without a cart may use another box or container for curbside recycling.

Fairfax County’s recycling-cart shortage affects households that receive county-run trash and recycling collection, a group the county estimates at about 10% of residents. Customers who use a private collector need to contact that company instead.

The county is continuing to log repair and replacement requests while a new vendor produces more 95-gallon carts. Residents who still have a cart may keep using it. Residents without one may place clean, loose and dry recyclables in a box or another container at the curb on their regular collection day.

There is no firm delivery date for the next shipment. The county says it will add staff and resources to work through pending requests once the carts arrive; people who have already submitted a request do not need to submit it again.

County collection customers can use the official request form or call Public Works customer service at 703-802-3322. They should continue following the normal collection schedule while waiting for a repair or replacement.
