The approved colleges are Kilgore College, Weatherford College, Texas Southmost College, San Jacinto College and Central Texas College. Their nine programs cover electric-power technology, phlebotomy, pharmacy technology, HVAC, basic and advanced machining, and structural welding. Approval allows qualifying students to use Workforce Pell aid for these short programs under federal rules.
Separately, a consortium led by the Alamo Colleges District received $10.4 million from the U.S. Department of Labor. Texas says the four-year project will help community colleges create or expand short-term programs that can qualify for Workforce Pell and is expected to serve 22,000 students.
The governor’s release does not say when every approved program will begin accepting Workforce Pell students, how much aid an individual will receive or whether each applicant qualifies. Prospective students should confirm the program’s start date, admissions requirements, tuition and federal-aid eligibility directly with the named college before enrolling.
