Austin and Travis County activate emergency operations for heavy rain

Staff Writer · 2026-10-02 · Austin and Travis County

Austin and Travis County activated their joint emergency operations center at Level 3 on October 1 as heavy rain and possible flooding affected Central Texas, with barricade crews scheduled to remain on call through 6 a.m. October 5.

The city said the National Weather Service flood watch for Travis County ran through 7 p.m. October 2, with two to three inches of rain forecast in the Austin area and isolated totals up to eight inches possible. Emergency management, fire, police, transportation and watershed personnel increased staffing or readiness.

Hamilton Pool closed on October 1 because of flood risk. Visitors with October 2 reservations were told to check the Travis County Parks website for updates and would be notified if the closure continued.

Residents should not enter flooded roads or move barricades, should monitor low-water crossings at ATXFloods.com and should register for official emergency alerts. Conditions can change quickly, so the city’s alerts page remains the source for current instructions.
