What you need to know about Nashville’s gas monitoring

Staff Writer · October 27, 2026 · Nashville

Correction and update · October 28, 2026

October 28 update: Added the continuing evacuation orders, proposed ventilation trench, conditions for reassessment and anticipated October 30 public update. The original publication time and article address are unchanged.

The Nashville Fire Department said October 28 that evacuation orders remained in place for Building H at Crest at Burkitt Ridge Apartments and six nearby townhomes after methane and carbon monoxide were detected. Trenching could start October 28 and continue October 29, subject to coordination and approvals. The department said the work would not automatically permit residents to return and anticipated another public update October 30.

Who remains under an evacuation order?

The fire department’s October 28 statement keeps the orders for Building H and six townhomes in force. Its October 27 release identifies the apartment complex as Crest at Burkitt Ridge. Residents of those properties must wait for official permission to return; this guide does not establish present conditions inside any home.

Have more homes been ordered evacuated?

Not in the October 28 announcement. NFD says its assessments did not warrant additional evacuations, although crews continued detecting methane in parts of the area. That is a report of the department’s findings at the time, not a guarantee about later conditions.

What work is proposed?

The contractor and developer are preparing a trench intended to let underground gases escape within the construction site, rather than migrate toward homes. The announcement says excavation could start October 28 and extend into October 29, depending on approvals and coordination. It does not confirm that work has begun or finished.

Would finishing the trench allow residents back?

Not automatically. NFD says the evacuation orders will continue during excavation, with monitoring during and after the work. Officials will reassess the restrictions using those results; a completed trench is not itself permission to reenter.

Has the source of the gases been identified?

The October 28 release says the cause and contributing factors remain under review, and a baseline methane level for the location has not been established. Its discussion of possible background conditions is an explanation being evaluated, not a confirmed finding about the source. The guide does not assign responsibility to any contractor or property owner.

Where should residents seek property-specific instructions?

The department identifies property managers and homeowners’ associations as the main contacts for access, temporary accommodations and other property questions. It tells residents to follow emergency personnel’s directions and stay out of restricted properties and the construction site. For a suspected immediate gas hazard, NFD’s instruction is to get away from the hazard and dial 911 once in a safe place.

When is the next update expected?

NFD anticipates another public statement October 30 after the planned mitigation and further monitoring. That is an expected update date, not a promised reopening. The October 28 announcement does not set a time for residents to return.
