What you need to know about Daniel Island’s donated land

Staff Writer · October 22, 2026 · Charleston

Charleston said October 21, 2026, that residents will be invited to help plan the use of 62 donated acres off Oak Leaf Street on Daniel Island, with public engagement beginning in January. Athletic fields, trails and parking are staff ideas, not an adopted development plan. The city also described a possible recreation-center pier, planned pedestrian work and separate land acquisition efforts near Point Hope.

Which land is the city discussing?

The announcement concerns 62 acres off Oak Leaf Street on Daniel Island donated by the Brumley family. Mayor William Cogswell outlined a public planning process at the Daniel Island and Cainhoy stop of the State of Our City series. The notice does not announce a finished park or approved construction plan for the parcel.

Have particular uses already been chosen?

No final use is identified in the announcement. City staff have discussed athletic fields, trails and parking, but residents are to have an opportunity to contribute ideas before the land’s future is settled. Those examples should not be treated as facilities that have already been funded or promised.

When can residents offer ideas?

The city says its public engagement process will begin in January. The October notice does not provide a specific meeting date, comment deadline or submission form for that process. The next confirmed step is the launch of engagement, rather than a construction opening date.

Is the proposed pier part of an approved project?

Charleston separately describes a possible public pier behind the Daniel Island Recreation Center. It remains a concept subject to the city’s normal public process. The release gives no approved construction schedule or budget for it.

What pedestrian work is more immediate?

At Seven Farms Drive and Pier View Street, the city says curb extensions and flashing beacons could begin being installed as soon as the week after its announcement. Wildwood was selected as contractor for the $182,000 project. That is an expected start, not confirmation that crews have begun work or that the improvements are complete.

How does the Point Hope land effort differ?

Near Point Hope, the city says just over four acres are under contract within an effort to assemble about 28 acres for future services, including fire and police stations. About 15 acres in that larger effort are wetlands. Those figures concern a separate acquisition effort, not the 62-acre donation on Daniel Island, and being under contract does not mean the purchase has closed.

What else is being reviewed in Cainhoy?

The Point Hope development team submitted a plan for the property’s full build-out to the Technical Review Committee at the city’s request, according to the release. The city describes it as a way to plan roads, drainage and services over more than 20 years; submission is not a statement that every proposed phase has been approved. The city also said unanswered questions from the community event would receive written responses online or by email within 10 days.
