What you need to know about Providence’s arts-facility grants

Staff Writer · October 29, 2026 · Providence

Providence’s Department of Art, Culture and Tourism is accepting applications through November 16, 2026, for the first $350,000 round of a two-year, $700,000 cultural-facilities program. A separate $50,000 fiscal-2027 festival fund will accept requests from November 15, 2026, through May 15, 2027.

What can a cultural venue apply for?

Providence’s Department of Art, Culture and Tourism is offering grants to repair or improve nonprofit cultural venues in the city. It expects most facility awards to fall between $25,000 and $100,000, but allows requests outside that range and requires no matching contribution. The first fiscal-year 2027 round has $350,000 available; another $350,000 is allocated for fiscal 2028.

Which organizations and leases qualify?

The published rules require a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a Providence facility used regularly for arts and cultural activity. Individuals, businesses organized as LLCs, for-profit organizations and fiscally sponsored collectives are excluded. An applicant must own the property or meet the department’s lease terms: a 20-year lease, or a five-year lease with a 20-year option.

Does previous city funding affect eligibility?

Yes. The department rules out applicants whose total funding from Providence reached $100,000 in fiscal 2025 and 2026 combined, counting grants, subsidies and contracts. That is a combined two-year threshold, not a separate $100,000 allowance for each year.

What kinds of improvements can receive funding?

The work must enhance or repair a public cultural venue where people present or teach arts such as music, dance, writing, performance or visual art. Improvements must last at least five years, and the project must be achievable within the applicable funding period. Administrative offices that artists, students and audiences cannot use are excluded; this is not unrestricted operating support.

What are the application and spending dates?

The first facility round opened October 16 and closes November 16, 2026; the published pages do not give a closing hour or time zone. The department lists a review panel for the week of December 14 and requires fiscal-2027 grants to be spent by June 30, 2028, with fiscal-2028 grants spent by June 30, 2029. A facilities information session is scheduled for October 30 at noon, with a recording expected November 2; the city directs RSVPs to rnoon@providenceri.gov.

Is this the same application as the festival fund?

No. The separate festival fund offers $1,500 to $4,000 for qualifying free public cultural festivals, with rolling applications beginning November 15, 2026, and a final date of May 15, 2027. Its rules cover events held from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027, and include permit, event-budget and operating-history requirements that do not determine eligibility for a building-improvement grant. The city announcement links both programs to the department’s website; an application or request is not a funding award.
