Oregon seeks more time to implement new Medicaid requirements

Staff Writer · 2026-10-03

Governor Tina Kotek and governors from four other states asked the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to delay new Medicaid requirements scheduled for January 1, 2027; Oregon has not announced that the federal deadline has changed.

The October 1 request asks federal officials for additional implementation time to reduce avoidable coverage disruptions. Oregon says warning letters about possible coverage changes are already reaching residents and that the state is training eligibility workers and coordinating its response.

The request was joined by the governors of California, Maine, New Mexico and Virginia. It follows a May 2026 multistate letter that sought written federal guidance, implementation flexibility and final rules before the January 1, 2027 start date.

This is a request, not a granted extension. Oregon Health Plan members should continue to read official notices and meet any stated response requirements unless the state or federal government announces a change. The governor's release does not establish new eligibility rules or a new resident application deadline.
