Fargo voters reject change to ward-based council

Staff Writer · 2026-10-08 · Fargo

Preliminary, unofficial results show Fargo voters rejected a ward-based council proposal by 6,100 votes to 4,788; the canvassing board is scheduled to certify the result October 19.

Fargo’s October 6 special-election measure received 6,100 no votes, or 56.02 percent, and 4,788 yes votes, or 43.98 percent, according to the city’s preliminary, unofficial results. The proposal needed a simple majority to replace the current at-large City Commission with a ward-based City Council.

The Special Election Canvassing Board is scheduled to meet at 11 a.m. Central on Monday, October 19, in the Red River Room at Fargo City Hall, 225 Fourth Street North, to review and certify the results.

If certification confirms the preliminary count, Fargo will continue with a five-member commission consisting of the mayor and four commissioners elected citywide. The city’s release does not announce a new filing, registration or public-comment deadline; residents should treat the totals as preliminary until the canvassing board completes certification.
