North Carolina rural-health technology grants: the application steps

Staff Writer · 2026-10-03

North Carolina launched a Rural Health Innovation Fund on September 30, planning approximately $20 million annually for up to five years, subject to continued federal funding, to help rural providers modernize health technology.

The current program page requires a qualifying health-care organization in one of 85 designated rural counties or with at least 40 percent rural patients, a low or medium risk rating, and good standing. Technology vendors cannot apply directly. Primary-care providers and federally qualified health centers receive priority, but the FAQ says other eligible providers can be awarded.

Complete the readiness intake first. The September 29 FAQ lists an October 31 intake closing date, an October 15 application opening, and a November 16 application deadline at 11:59 p.m. through the NCDIT Grant Portal. The reviewed notices do not specify the deadline timezone; ask RHIF@nc.gov to confirm it.

Eligible work includes telehealth, electronic health-record upgrades and cybersecurity. Awards are competitive and reimbursement-based: providers generally pay approved expenses before reimbursement. Awards are anticipated in January 2027, with first-round activity completed by July 30, 2027. Review the current program page and FAQ before committing expenses.
