Raleigh pumpkin composting starts October 17—use the drop-off site, not curbside

Staff Writer · 2026-10-14 · Raleigh

Raleigh announced October 13, 2026, that residents may take seasonal pumpkins and gourds to the Yard Waste Center at 900 N. New Hope Road for free composting from October 17 through December 12. Drop-offs follow the center's normal hours, with a Thanksgiving Day closure on November 26 and possible weather-related changes.

This seasonal offer requires a trip to the center. The city says pumpkins and gourds must not go in curbside yard-waste bins or biodegradable collection bags because they interfere with processing. The free pumpkin offer should not be confused with ordinary excess-yard-waste disposal, which can carry a fee.

Published hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Check the city's Raleigh Reuse tool for closures before traveling. Commercial yard-waste loads are not accepted, and center staff cannot help load or unload materials.

The notice does not establish a separate eligibility rule for businesses or a precise end-of-offer timezone. Those terms have not been inferred. For questions about acceptable material or current access, use the Yard Waste Center information linked from the official announcement.
