Sylvan Beach completes $51 million wastewater plant upgrade

Staff Writer · 2026-10-08 · Sylvan Beach

Sylvan Beach completed a $51 million modernization of the East Oneida Lake Wastewater Treatment Plant, supported by nearly $28 million in grants and more than $23 million in low-cost state financing.

The completed work replaces and modernizes infrastructure at the 1970s-era East Oneida Lake Wastewater Treatment Plant. New York says the plant serves about 8,000 residents in five communities and supports water quality in Fish Creek and Oneida Lake, including an area used by visitors to Verona Beach State Park.

The financing package combines $27 million in Environmental Facilities Corporation grants, an $833,330 Department of Environmental Conservation grant and more than $23 million in low-cost financing. The state projects that the grants and lower-cost borrowing will avoid more than $75 million in debt-service expense compared with traditional financing.

For residents and businesses, the immediate change is completion of the treatment-system upgrade rather than a new application or service deadline. The state says the improvements are intended to make wastewater service more reliable while reducing pollution risks that could affect public health, recreation, tourism and the lake's ecosystem.

Sylvan Beach Mayor Richard Sullivan said the project finished on time and within budget. The release does not provide a new rate schedule or quantify each customer's bill impact, so residents should look to future village utility notices for any account-specific changes.
