Avenue B upgrades are finished; the northbound traffic change covers three blocks

Staff Writer · 2026-10-14 · New York City

NYC DOT announced on October 13, 2026, that permanent improvements to Manhattan's Avenue B Open Street were complete between East 4th and East 14th streets. The work adds pedestrian space and loading arrangements, while vehicle traffic runs northbound between East 7th and East 10th streets. Daily Open Street hours remain 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The completed design includes curb extensions, intersection-visibility changes and cycling improvements. The three-block northbound vehicle segment should not be mistaken for a one-way conversion of the entire ten-block project area. Delivery vans can still enter to load or unload, and emergency and sanitation access remain available.

DOT places dedicated loading areas at the beginning and end of blocks. Businesses arranging deliveries should distinguish those spaces from the additional pedestrian area; the announcement does not change the daily Open Street operating hours.

The same announcement opens applications for 2027 Open Streets. Organizations seeking a full closure with concession seating must apply by November 13, 2026, for an earliest May 2027 start. Full-closure and limited-local-access applications are due December 31, 2026, also for an earliest May start. A concession-seating proposal requires a concession agreement.

School applications for a spring start are due December 31, 2026; applications for a fall start are due May 7, 2027, with September as the earliest start. DOT says review takes at least 90 days and may take longer. Submitting by a deadline does not guarantee approval or a start date. The official program page supplies application instructions; no cutoff hour or timezone was established for a precise deadline tracker.
