New Jersey Municipality News · PRACTICAL EXPLAINER

New Jersey offers towns a free starting map of vacant public land

Staff Writer · 2026-10-15

New Jersey’s Department of Community Affairs announced NJHOMES Atlas on October 2, 2026. The free tool lets municipal staff check an initial inventory of about 42,000 vacant public parcels, covering roughly 110,000 acres, and publish corrected local records.

The inventory combines state property-tax information with official parcel records. It is provisional: local employees can identify entries needing correction or removal and record why. DCA operates the service, and a reviewed list can appear on both the state platform and a municipality’s website.

DCA is inviting towns into a pilot to test the tool against local needs. For officials, the next step is to examine the municipal list rather than assume the starting data describe every site correctly. The announcement also describes possible planning uses, such as reviewing adjoining parcels together.

The release connects Atlas to a federal public-inventory requirement for Community Development Block Grant recipients. It does not announce a property sale, a development approval or a grant award. No new resident application or deadline is established in this notice.
