Nebraska declares emergency after southeast flooding

Staff Writer · 2026-10-04

Governor Jim Pillen declared an emergency for southeast Nebraska after record-setting rain and flooding, authorizing state resources while damage assessments determine whether assistance will become available.

The declaration followed heavy rain and flooding in southeast Nebraska, including rescues of motorists from flooded roads. Governor Jim Pillen signed the proclamation after surveying affected areas in northern Lancaster County with state and local emergency officials.

The declaration allows state resources to be used and directs state and federal agencies to cooperate with Nebraska's adjutant general, who also leads the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency. NEMA is coordinating with FEMA, the Small Business Administration and the Natural Resources Conservation Service while damage assessments are compiled.

The governor's release does not announce an individual or business assistance program, an application process or a deadline. Residents and businesses should document damage and monitor NEMA and local emergency-management notices for any later eligibility rules or application steps, while avoiding flooded roads and obeying local closures.
