Michigan transit awards fund local services and planning

Staff Writer · 2026-10-14

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced approximately $65 million for 18 transit projects on October 13, 2026, in the first round of Michigan’s Infrastructure Projects Authority Fund. MDOT also plans a new position to coordinate transit and rail.

The transit awards fund projects, not an immediate statewide change in bus routes. MDOT administers the fund, established in the fiscal 2026 budget; these awards are its first round, not the entire available fund.

The list includes $10 million for Detroit People Mover rail cars, $6 million for Grand Rapids event-night mobility and $4.3 million for a new rural transit agency in Newaygo County. Other awards support planning rather than operating a new route, including $6.6 million for a Washtenaw/Huron/Jackson bus rapid transit project.

A funding award does not establish the opening date of a new service. Riders and employers should check the relevant local operator’s announcements for routes, fares and start dates; the release does not set one timetable for all projects or open an application window for residents.
