Maryland park and conservation funding reaches Baltimore City and 10 counties

Staff Writer · 2026-10-07

Maryland's Board of Public Works approved $12.7 million in Department of Natural Resources grants for local recreation and conservation projects in Baltimore City and 10 counties, with separate state land-acquisition funding also approved.

Nearly $11.79 million of the October 7 approvals supports 21 Program Open Space — Local projects. The list includes basketball-court and playground work at Wiley H. Bates Heritage Park in Anne Arundel County, new pickleball courts in Cambridge, a replacement splash pad in St. Mary's County, upgrades at East Wicomico Little League Park in Salisbury and new fields, paths and a playground in Berlin.

Other approved work includes park and recreation projects in Hagerstown and Baltimore City. The Board also approved $370,500 for two Community Parks and Playgrounds projects, $253,000 for a 31.9-acre conservation easement in Baltimore County and $293,000 for a 72.9-acre easement in Charles County.

Separate stateside funding covers purchases in Charles, Worcester and Wicomico counties: three parcels totaling just under 844 acres, at an approved cost of $1.87 million. Approval is the funding step; construction and opening dates will depend on each local project, so residents should use the linked official release and the relevant local government's updates for schedules.
