Maryland pauses extra light-goose season while regular hunting dates remain

Staff Writer · 2026-10-03

Maryland will not hold the additional federal Light Goose Conservation Order season in 2026–27 because greater snow goose populations have declined, but the state’s regular light-goose seasons remain scheduled from November 7, 2026, through March 10, 2027, in several segments.

Maryland DNR says the statewide segments run November 7–27 and November 30–February 6, 2027. An Eastern Zone-only segment runs February 8–March 10, 2027. The Eastern Zone boundaries are listed in the department’s official notice and online map.

The daily bag limit is 25 light geese with no possession limit. Legal hunting hours are one-half hour before sunrise through sunset; DNR warns that printed copies of the 2026–27 hunting guide contain an error on those hours and directs hunters to the online regulations for the corrected information.

During the February–March Eastern Zone segment, hunters may use shotguns holding more than three shells and electronic light-goose calls. Licenses, stamps and permits remain required, and hunters should review the current online regulations before going afield.
