South Portland closes part of Hill Street for about two weeks

Staff Writer · 2026-10-07 · South Portland

South Portland says a section of Hill Street will close around the clock beginning October 8 for realignment work connected to the Broadway Pedestrian Improvements Project, with traffic detoured to Lombard Street.

Contractor Shaw Brothers is scheduled to begin the Broadway pedestrian project on Thursday, October 8. The first phase realigns Hill Street and requires the affected section to remain closed 24 hours a day for approximately two weeks.

Drivers will be directed to Lombard Street. Emergency vehicles may pass through the closed section when needed, but other motorists should follow the posted detour rather than attempting to enter the work zone.

The city did not provide an exact reopening date or time beyond the approximate two-week window. Residents and businesses should check the official notice for schedule changes as work proceeds.
