Maine heating aid: apply through your local agency before funding runs out

Staff Writer · 2026-10-14

Governor Janet Mills’s October 2 notice urged eligible households to seek heating assistance while requesting more federal funding. MaineHousing’s current 2026–2027 HEAP guidance provides online and local-agency application routes, with intake ending when funds run out or on May 29, 2027.

HEAP can help qualifying homeowners and renters with heating bills; it is not intended to cover every heating expense. Income, household size and other program criteria determine eligibility. MaineHousing lists annual gross-income limits of $38,070 for one person and $73,213 for four people, with additional rules and possible deductions for eligible medical costs.

Use MaineHousing’s online application or contact the Community Action Agency serving your ZIP code for a phone or in-person appointment. Prepare household identification, income evidence and complete energy bills, and ask the agency what else it requires. Missing requested documents can lead to denial; a benefit is generally credited through the fuel supplier rather than handed to the applicant.

The governor’s request for extra LIHEAP money is not an approved supplemental award. The current program page says HEAP applications opened August 3 and may stop before May 29 if funds are exhausted. It separately lists November 1–April 30 for the crisis-assistance season. Contact the agency to confirm current availability and any crisis eligibility; no precise cutoff hour is supplied.
