Iowa extends harvest overweight allowance through November 7

Staff Writer · 2026-10-12

Iowa's extended harvest proclamation lets qualifying loads of grain, forage, fertilizer and manure travel without an overweight permit on Iowa highways other than the Interstate system through November 7, subject to a 90,000-pound gross cap, axle limits and posted road and bridge limits.

Governor Kim Reynolds extended the harvest proclamation on October 10. Through November 7, vehicles carrying corn, soybeans, hay, straw, silage, stover, fertilizer or manure may operate without an overweight permit when the load meets the proclamation's conditions and does not exceed 90,000 pounds gross weight. The allowance does not apply on the Interstate system.

The extension does not override every weight and safety rule. A load may not exceed the applicable non-primary-highway axle-table limit by more than 12.5 percent, any axle may not exceed 20,000 pounds, and drivers must comply with posted limits on roads and bridges. Carriers should verify the route and vehicle weights before travel; the official notice does not say the proclamation changes insurance, driver-safety or other federal requirements.

Farmers, haulers, local road departments and businesses should plan around the November 7 expiration unless the state issues another proclamation. Local officials may need to monitor vulnerable roads and bridges. The extension provides temporary harvest flexibility, not blanket permission for every load or route. The release gives no ending clock time, so no exact-time tracker deadline was inferred.
