What you need to know about Illinois fire-equipment grants

Staff Writer · 2026-10-15

Illinois is accepting applications for its FY27 Small Equipment Grant, a competitive $6 million program offering up to $50,000 for approved firefighting and ambulance equipment. Applicants must meet registration and incident-reporting requirements and submit both required online forms by November 30, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Central Time.

What is available?

Illinois has a $6 million competitive grant round for small firefighting and ambulance equipment, with an individual award ceiling of $50,000. The current grant listing expects 120 awards; that is a program estimate, not a promise that every applicant will receive funding.

Which organizations can apply?

The state lists fire departments, fire protection districts, township fire departments and nonprofit ambulance services. Applicants need a current SAM.gov registration and an Illinois Grantee Portal registration; departments assigned a fire-department identification number also need compliant incident reporting for October 2024 through September 2026.

How is the application submitted?

Illinois departments have two online forms to finish: the Uniform Grant Application in Euna Grants and the Small Equipment Grant application linked from the fire marshal’s program page. The agency says omitting either form makes an applicant ineligible, and it does not accept printed applications.

Can the money cover any equipment purchase?

A grant is not permission to buy any item: funding is limited to equipment approved for purchase, and indirect costs are excluded. The agency gives Tier I equipment priority and says equipment outside that first-priority group will be considered only after all Tier I items have been funded.

When are applications and questions due?

The current application closes November 30, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Central Time. Its question-submission window ends November 29 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time, and program questions go to Roger Branson at 217-785-4717 or Roger.D.Branson@illinois.gov.

What responsibilities follow an award?

Recipients must provide a final spending report and supporting invoices or canceled checks within nine months after the grant ends. The current listing warns that violations, unapproved purchases, missing expenditure documentation or unspent awards can require money to be returned in an amount the agency determines.
