The completed section of State Road 777 is a regional evacuation route. The state and Sarasota County jointly funded the work, which expanded the original four-lane plan to six lanes. Drivers now have additional roadway capacity; the announcement does not quantify a travel-time reduction.
Two 10-foot shared-use paths, one on each side, provide space for walking and cycling. The project also includes upgraded lighting and signals, pedestrian refuge islands, accessible curb ramps and two wildlife underpasses.
Residents do not need to apply for this transportation improvement. The October 2 announcement reports completion ahead of schedule. Evacuation instructions and conditions during any actual storm remain separate from the road’s added capacity.
