Marin reports Tomales Bay shellfish restrictions after Olema septic leak

Staff Writer · 2026-10-15 · Marin County / Tomales Bay

Marin County's October 14, 2026 release reports that California public-health officials closed Tomales Bay's shellfish growing areas and wet-storage intakes following a sewage leak into Olema Creek. County inspectors capped the leaking pipe, with further inspections, repairs and water sampling planned.

The notice identifies a septic-system leak at Due West Hotel in Olema. It says the state imposed the shellfish restrictions on Monday after county staff responded to the spill on Friday; it supplies no reopening date.

County health and environmental officials reported no adverse effects on people or wildlife. That report does not establish that harvesting has resumed or that water testing is complete. No later reopening announcement was found in the checked county release list, and the state's shellfish pages could not be retrieved.

Growers and others needing current closure information can contact Marin Environmental Health Services at 415-473-6907. The county also urges property owners to inspect septic systems before storm season. This notice does not announce a general beach closure or a recall of every shellfish product sold locally.
